“But Jason does because he dated her.”

A slight nod of his head. “Yeah.”

“And Emrys?”

“He was interested in her. In her power, I assume, though she is pretty…”

I swallow hard. “Sin—”

“But she doesn’t hold a candle to you,” his gaze moves to my face, darkening, “as humans say.”

I shake my head. “I don’t believe that. She’s always been the pretty one.”

“Says who? I say you’ve always been the pretty one and she’s always been jealous of you.”

That makes me snort. “Yeah, right.”

He lifts a hand to my cheek. “I’m serious,Almaya. It seems to me your relationship with this cousin of yours is complicated.”

“It never felt that way before,” I whisper. “She was always there for me.”

“But she isn’t who you thought she was.”

“And I’m not the same girl who grew up in the church, but it changes nothing.”

His dark brows lift. “It changeseverything. You have powers now. I will help you explore them, understand them.”

“What if she’s right, Sin? What if she’s your best bet at beating this? At controlling your magic, at finding out who shot those arrows? At casting off the spell they put on your blood and regaining your demonblood magic?”

“Ah.” He traces my lips with his thumb, his gaze going distant. “Demonblood magic isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

“I don’t believe you.” My heart is racing. “You’re suffering from the elemental magic surges, and soon we’ll have another full moon and you won’t say anything and then you’ll be in pain and I—”

“Shush. I promise I will tell you if I need your help this time.”

“You will?” That makes me smile at him, and his thumb moves up to my cheekbone as he leans down to kiss me.

“Oh yeah.” His lips move over mine, hot and deliberate, his other hand closing on the small of my back, hauling me against him. “I need lots of help, like last time.”

That makes me laugh and I twist in his hold, breaking the kiss and ducking under his arm to sit on the bed and put on my shoes. “We can’t keep having sex, Sin.”

He opens his hands. “Why not?”

“There has to be a real solution. Emrys was right. This is only a patch-up.”

“I’m quite fond of this patch-up method you speak of.”

“I bet you are.” Still smiling, my cheeks hot, I get up, smoothing my dress down my legs. “Ready?”

He still hesitates. “Mia, this could be dangerous.Kraish. Zoey has it out for you. Many of the girls here do.”

“I must go, Sin. You don’t have to accompany me. I’ll be fine. Brianna is going, too.”

“You know I won’t let you go alone.” He shakes his head. “I’m going, even if I think this is the mother of all bad ideas.Isresh.”

“What does it mean?”

“Giant beetle dung,” he says and grins at me. “Let’s go.”
