His grin fades. “Abesh, Mia…”

“It was trying to warn me.” I pat the warm wood behind me again. “Your desk was trying to warn me to protect you from dangers you can’t see, but I don’t know what it all means. You need to tell me what it means.”

“Nothing.” His mouth twists. “It’s a bunch of nonsense.”

“But your mother—”

“Fear won’t stop me from telling the elders that my mother is dead. I need to know what happened. All my life I’ve been searching for her only to find out that…” He closes his eyes, takes a shallow breath. “That I won’t ever find her. Least I can do is demand an explanation.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to ask Ashton first?”

“Of course I’ll ask him first.”

“Without a duel, please?” I bat my lashes at him. “He knows stuff. He’s more useful to you alive.”

He laughs again. “Gods below, Mia… Only you can make me laugh.”

I perk up at that. “Does it mean you won’t fight him?”

“He was there when my mother died.”

“He didn’t kill her though.”

“He’s an ass.”

“He cares for you. Don’t you care about the others?”

“Of course I fucking care. I’ve… I’vecometo care.” He frowns as if his own words surprise him.

Aw shucks. He’s admitted it. He looks so adorably confused and annoyed at himself at the realization that all I want is to squeeze him and pinch his cheeks—and then kiss him and do wicked things to him and—

“Ow.” One minute I’m ready to squee and jump on Sindri, the next I’m clutching my head. “Something bad is happening.”

“Mia.” Sindri is climbing off the bed, walking toward me in all his naked glory, but I’m in too much pain to appreciate his physique right now. “You okay?”

“I feel something. Pain. Stings. Hurts. Oh God…”

His arms go around me. “What is it? Are you hurt?”

“It’s not me. Magic. It burns. Flames.”

“Flames.” He draws back, gazes at me with those star-flecked eyes. “Is it Emrys?”

“Something’s wrong. And he’s nearby.”

He nods. “Let’s go.”

MIA

Emrys isn’t in his room.

As it turns out, Sindri is also pretty good at picking locks. And it seems that Emrys didn’t put back the wards on his door to keep us out. It makes me smile wistfully as hope rekindles in me.

Where can he be?

“Rys!” Sindri has pulled on pants and his boots, but is bare from the waist up and is too distracting a sight. “Emrys!”
