“You mean people. Like Jason and Emrys,” she whispers.

“Like that. Make zombies out of them. Slaves who’d die for you. And the stronger you become, the more you can control until…”

“… until entire cities and countries can fall under your power,” Sindri finishes, “and all those magical creatures you control have access to the elements and through them, you’d control everything. You’d hold the power that moves the world.”

“That’s impossible,” Mia whispers.

“Normally, it would be. But if you have a Golden Moon and a Queen, aVasilissa, bent on grabbing control, you have the right conditions for a Witching.”

She shudders. “Isn’t there another side to this power? I thought there were two sides to every coin. I just…” She looks down. “I don’t want to believe that my cousin would want to take over the world.”

“Is there,” I say carefully, “any chance that she is planning on helping us after all?”

“Are you deaf?” Sindri growls, lifting his head from Mia’s shoulder. “She spoke of the Golden Moon.”

“No,” Mia says, “youdid, Sin. She was careful not to reveal too much, I guess.”

Sindri frowns. “She spoke of a final event.”

“Which you can interpret any way you like. Maybe she meant the final step in helping you get back your demonblood magic.”

Sindri snorts. “Right.Danu resh. Are you saying she wants the best for us? The way she draws on magic, damn…”

“No.” Mia sighs. “No, truth is… I don’t think she wants the best for anyone but herself.”

“So how do we stop her?” I stroke a thumb over Mia’s cheek, her skin warm and supple. “How do we break the enchantment?”

“That’s exactly the problem.” She puffs out a frustrated breath. “I don’t know. Yes, I’m starting to accept that I have some magic, but nowhere near what Ophelia does, and I have no idea how she created that enchantment, let alone how to break it. Maybe… Maybe she just thinks about it and it happens. What do I know about how elemental magic works?”

“It draws on emotions,” Sindri says.

Mia sighs. “Yeah, I got that. Intense emotions. She hooks into them somehow. But how can we change the situation, remove the source of her power?”

“You know her best,” I say. “Any ideas?”

“I told you.” Mia makes a face and it’s fucking cute. “I thought I knew her. Turns out I was wrong.”

“You were going to ask your elders,” I tell Sindri. “Weren’t you? When do you think you can make time in your busy schedule for that?”

“Haha.” Sindri snarls. “So funny.”

“The family visit day is coming up,” I suggest. “Maybe you can take advantage of that.”

“The elders aren’t my family.”

“But you could ask your family to ask them. If you don’t have their phone number handy. Just saying.”

Sindri groans, closes his eyes. “Right. More favors.”

Mia twists around to look at him. “No more favors. Your desk said—”

“Yourdesk?” I repeat, incredulous. “Sindri’s desksaid?”

“Well, yeah,” Mia says, “it’s magical and it said—”

“—a load of nonsense,” Sindri finishes and slides a hand up Mia’s throat. “I think we are done talking here, aren’t we?”

He kisses her, and holy fuck, she was right, this is hot—watching them, longing to join in. He has her face turned awkwardly to the side and he’s curved over her back. She’s tense where I’m holding her, her lashes fluttering as he deepens the kiss, and I grunt, my dick trapped in my pants under her thighs, throbbing madly. I smooth my hands forward, upward, to cup her breasts. My thumbs move over the hard points of her nipples, over the layers of fabric and lace, and she shudders and whimpers, her arm that’s still clumsily resting on my shoulder falling away.
