“I remember her from the hospital.”

“She’s well known. Agatha Eugenie Marais D’Aube.” Sindri sounds pensive. “Currently groomed to become the heiress of the House of Water.”

“I thought Ash was the heir?”

“He was. Then he walked away and hid here. The family cannot touch him while he’s here.”

This is news to me. “They can’t? Why?”

“There’s an old law. This is an old Academy. It’s always been kind of outside time and space, outside the laws of the real world.”

“So… if my adoptive parents came, they couldn’t take me away?”

“That’s right.” He gives me a distracted smile. “Any chance they are coming?”

I shake my head. “Nah. What about your parents?”

“You mean my father?”

I bite my lip. “Yeah, sorry.” I’d forgotten about his mom for a second there.

“Nah. He’s never come.”

“Oh. I’m sorry for that, too.”

He glances away. “I’m not.”

“Trust me, some are more scared that their families will come than the other way round.”

I hold on tightly to his hand as we watch Ashton talking with his sister. I’m not sure what is being said, but Ash isn’t smashing things and yelling, so perhaps it’s not that bad? I have high hopes that his brother will pull through. I think I’d be able to tell if she had delivered bad news.

According to Sindri, Ashton made his choice. He left his family, left his role as heir. Question is, did he do it before or after he had to commit atrocities? And does it matter, if he has killed someone?

Restless, I turn to where Jason and Emrys are talking with each other. They seem to be having a disagreement, I realize, when Jason shoves Emrys with a hand to the chest.

Whoa. What’s going on?

“Keep an eye on Ash?” I pull my hand free from Sindri’s. “Going to see what is going on with Jax and Rys.”

Sindri seems absorbed in Ashton and his sister, and I remember that all magical races have a much better hearing, so he’s probably following what is being said whereas I can’t make out a single word.

By the time I reach the two boys, they’re throwing punches at each other and snarling like rabid dogs.

“Take it back,” Emrys is growling. “Motherfucker, take it back.”

“Never.” Jason grins all teeth in Emrys’ face. “Not when you think you can call me a mutt, while you’re salivating all over Ophelia.”

Emrys grabs at Jason. “Says the lovesick dog.”

“Fuck you!” Jason pushes him back.

“Try it if you fucking dare!”

My heart sinks, as much from the way Jason seems to be jealous over Emrys and Ophelia together as the rest. “Stop it, guys! Come on.”

“He started it,” Emrys says.

“He called me a mutt.”
