“Miss Worthy,” I manage through gritted teeth, still struggling with Ashton who seems to want to smash the secretary’s desk to pieces for lack of a better outlet, “would you please let us know the moment you hear from Sindri? We’re his friends and we’re concerned, as he hadn’t been feeling well today.”

“Always such a polite boy, Jason,” she purrs. “I will sure let you know if I have news.”

Yeah, well, I learned to hold my anger back and be polite the hard way. Nothing gets you thrown into a black hole with no food and drink, or beaten within an inch of your life faster than acting out on your anger.

But damn if I don’t wanna snarl in her face, too.

As it is, I grind out, “Thank you,” and haul Ashton out, hoping the others will follow.

“Let me go. The hell is wrong with you.” Ashton shoves me off and staggers a few steps away.

“That’s right, I should have let you beat the secretary up. That would have helped a whole fucking lot.” I glare at him. “Let me remind you this isn’t her fault, Ash.”

“She let that fucking elder take Sin!” he hisses.

“She didn’tlethim. The elder took Sin. Against regulations. And has to return him by tonight.”

He shakes a fist at me. “Why are you making up excuses for her?”

“Goddamn you, Ash! All I’m saying is, this isn’t the way to get him back.”

“As if you care about getting him back,” he all but spits at me. “We’re his friends and we’re worried. As for you, you stopped giving a fuck the moment Ophelia came back to the school.”

“Fuck you if you don’t think I care.” I struggle with the words, my confused feelings. “Ophelia is… different.”

“Yeah, because she’s a witch and has bewitched you.”

“I…” I have to deny this, I know, but for some reason, this time the words don’t come. I don’t care about the others, only about Ophelia, only for my love for her…

Okay, and why can’t I feel it?

Why am I worried about Sin?

Why does the horror in Mia’s eyes make me want to punch someone—maybe Ashton if he doesn’t stop getting on my last nerve?

“Maybe it’s time you told us what’s going on with you and Ophelia,” Ashton snarls.

“And maybe it’s time you told us,” I snarl right back, “why we almost died for you, Sindri and I. Who is after you?”

“My family, who else?”

I blink. “Are they crazy?”

“No more than your average old inbred vampire family,” Ashton mutters, losing some steam. “And you can stop the show of caring. You all wanted me dead just a few days ago.”

“You…” I’m seething. “I shouldn’t have let a bastard like you into my bed, you asshole.” I move right into his face, lift a fist under his nose. “I should deck you right where you stand.”

I expect him to retaliate and I flinch when he lifts a hand toward my face, but he only grips my chin. “Jax…”

“What?”

His mouth twists. His thumb brushes over my lips. “Fuck, I’m sorry.”

“About getting into my bed?”

His gaze is now on my mouth. “No. I’m not sorry about that.”

Something in my chest eases. “Then—”
