“Screw you.” Jason gives him the finger but one side of his mouth curls up. “How do we know she isn’t still under that spell? Or worse still… that for some reason she’s changed sides for good?”
“She hasn’t,” I say with more conviction than I feel but damn, something in me refuses to believe she’d give up on us.
“She hasn’t,” Emrys echoes my words. “No way. Does that damn page say anything that’s actually useful?”
“All Queens have an affinity for the earth. Ha. That’s how she got you all those months back, Jax.” Ashton waggles his brows. “But they all attain their potential by linking to all four elements, especially simultaneously through various rituals, the most potent of them to take place under a Golden Moon.”
“Fascinating stuff,” Jason drawls and yawns.
“You just don’t like that she got to you first,” I mutter.
“What’s there to like?”
He’s got a point.
“Yeah, well. It doesn’t…” Ashton stops. “What the fuck?”
“Ash?”
He’s clutching the page like he wants to tear it to shreds. “The four elementals,” he breathes. “The four elementals the Queen will bond with won’t survive the ritual, as giving up all of their elemental magic means giving up their breath of life to the Queen. Four pureblood scions are usually chosen, free of corruption and crime, their record clean, their souls innocent.”
Emrys starts to laugh his great booming laughter. “Then this ritual stands no fucking chance of working. I’ve never been accused of being innocent. This is slander. I—”
“Shut up, Rys.” Ashton turns his eyes on us. They’re bright. “We were chosen. They tried to kill us for a reason, tried to heap crimes on us for a fucking reason. Don’t you see it?”
“We’re innocent,” I breathe. “Innocent of the murders they accused us of.”
“Damn right we are. We’re no saints, but we’re no killers, either. This letter may not be proof but it’s a damn good indication that we were wrongly accused.”
“What does it matter?” Jason says. “For all that’s worth, I don’t think you guys are murderers. But we have this enchantment to solve, a Queen Witch to take down, and let’s not forget the demonblood bespelled lock we need to break to get out of here. Unless you plan on saving the world from the confines of this file room?”
