The pressure in my chest is mounting. My throat feels clogged. “We have to get them out. Protect them.”

“And what can I do about it? What do you need from me?”

“Demonblood. To crack the lock on their room. They don’t have any demonblood of their own, because of the spell that’s still in them.”

“And then?”

“I don’t know,” I admit. “Break them out of the Academy, hide them.”

He leans against the doorframe, rubs at his brow, and sighs. “You’d better come on in.”

Apparently, the magical races are currently at peace with each other inside the Academy. At least that’s how it seems when Percy sends for the representatives of the other gangs during lunch break and I find myself in the presence of Anala of the fae, Elijah of the werewolves, and Az of the demons. They all nod at me as if they know me, and then glare at me.

I’ve betrayed their princes. Mistrust is thick in the air, but they seem cautious, not letting it show very much.

“Vasilissa,” Az says. “Percy says you need our blood to free our leaders, that they don’t have enough demonblood right now to escape on their own. Is that correct?”

I nod. “It will have to be tonight, when the administration offices are closed and empty.”

“Of course.” He licks his lips, eyeing me. “Was yesterday’s show part of your secret plan?”

“I…” I can’t tell them I’ve been under Ophelia’s enchantment. What little trust they still have in me will evaporate. “Something like that.”

His eyes gleam. “I approve of complicated plans. Always a fun element of surprise.”

“Right…”

“And will you conquer the world with them by your side?”

“I don’t care about the world,” I find myself saying.

“Let the world burn,” he agrees cheerfully. “One only needs good sex, bad booze, and loud music to be happy.”

And love, I think.

And love.
