Brianna grimaces. “How about… Beware of Zoey not being too nasty?”

“Put that way, it does sound suspicious,” I agree. “But what happened to make you think you should warn me?”

“Something she said.” She turns on her side to face me.

“Zoey?”

“No, her new bestie. That Ophelia chick.”

My jaw tenses. “And what did she say?”

“She said something about wanting you out of the way once the moon is full, and I don’t know if it means anything to you, but to me it sounds nefarious.”

“You think that, what, Zoey will try to send me away?”

“Or hurt you. I don’t know why the full moon is important. I thought it only affected werewolves.”

Unless the strongest elementals in town had their demonblood stripped, losing control of their elemental magic and starting to shift. Or… unless it’s the Golden Moon that comes once every few hundred years and a powerful witch is about to perform a terrible ritual.

Question is, why is Ophelia so afraid of me spoiling her plans? More and more I’m starting to think Ophelia isn’t as untroubled by me as she pretends to be—and that begs the question of what I am capable of.

God. Vanessa. Maybe if I ask more nicely, if I give her something she wants, she’ll help me? If I owe her a favor? I’d sworn I wouldn’t do that ever again, but these are desperate times.

Tomorrow I’ll look for her. Tonight… I sigh, glancing at the stack of books. I have a lot of studying to do.
