MIA

“Pet.”

I watch her give Sindri a hand up, lead him out of my room. He’s staggering, his face set in lines of pain, his eyes empty once more.

I don’t expect him to look back and he doesn’t.

It shouldn’t break my heart all over again.

I’m dressed in the clothes he got for me and I want to burn them. It’s the worst thing when hope flares and then dies. I thought maybe he’d managed to break the bond, or weaken it enough to let us talk. It seems he’d thought the same.

We were both wrong.

When we kissed, I thought I felt our bond strengthen, but then her enchantment wrapped around him like a steel box, cutting me out.

I think about what she said as I curl up on my bed. The night of the Golden Moon is approaching. She’s tightening her leash on the boys and she’s all but admitted that it’s because of me.

“I put so much effort in this enchantment only for you to disobey me time and again.”

I was right. She’s afraid of me—no, not me. Of my bond with the boys. Afraid I’ll get them back. Because she’s afraid, she’s hurting them worse.

But if she’s afraid, then there is a way. Has to be.

And if there is a way, by God I swear I’ll find it.

The boys aren’t in any of the classes we share anymore. I guess Ophelia decided to simply make sure we have no contact when we’re out of her sight. Or at all.

Gritting my teeth, missing them like I never thought I’d miss anyone, especially after having held Sindri in my arms yesterday, I walk out of the last class of the day and stand alone, lost.

Lost and afraid for them. I know the fate of the world may be at stake, though I don’t feel that yet. Can’t imagine it. But I know what is at stake for me, for my heart.

I don’t have to imagine the boys’ pain. I saw Sindri last night, writhing on the bed, on the floor. Begging her to stop.

This is real. Tangible. This is who I’m fighting for. For them. To save them from her claws.

The world can wait.

On a sudden whim, I head off toward the registration office. I can’t sit here, feeling helpless, poking at the dictionary of symbols, hoping for a revelation.

Miss Worthy looks less than thrilled to see me again so soon. “Mia. Have you found evidence of your accusations?”

“No, but…”

“But?”

“I need your help. I need someone who is familiar with magical symbols. I need to decipher this.” I thrust the diary at her.

She takes it, turns it around. “The diary of Ophelia Apollinari? You stole it from her?”

Crap. “I’m telling you she’s using her power for something bad. Miss Worthy, please—”

“I’m keeping this and will discuss this case with the Headmaster. You can’t just take other people’s things, Mia, even if these people are related to you.”

My heart sinks. “Please, Miss Worthy, this is important—”

“I’d say so. It’s important that you stole the diary of such a brilliant girl who has brought so much to the school.”
