“To Ophelia?”

“No. Yes. Wait.” I groan at the pain inside my skull. “To Percy.”

“Percy?”

“Percival Delage… Delage something.” I shake my head and ow, mistake. “One of the vampires.”

“Well, it’s nighttime. He’s probably in his room. Somewhere in this building.”

“Right.” I must know his room, right? If I know him. Damn brain. “I’m going, then. Guard the door if you like. I have things to do.”

“But—”

“Or go back to your demonkind. Guarding an empty room is kind of boring. My opinion, of course. Demons’ diversions always stump me.” I wave a hand at him and the stunned expression on his face is quite funny. “See you around.”

I stagger past two doors with guards posted and belatedly realize they are Sindri’s and Emrys’ rooms. From the distance, I see that Jason’s door is guarded as well.

What the hell?

I stop, press my hand to the wall, the corridor swimming in my eyes. Why are we imprisoned in our rooms? And does it mean that the others haven’t woken up yet?

Percy, find Percy… My steps lead me to the staircase and down the steps. Seems like my body remembers the way even if my conscious brain doesn’t. Down the steps, turn left, doors, more doors…

Here. I stop and put my hand on the wooden surface, turn the handle—no energy for niceties today—and enter.

Percy’s chair screeches as he pushes it back, almost toppling over in his haste to stand. “Ash!”

“Good, I’ve found you. Now…” I stumble to the bed and sink on its edge, the room spinning. “Now fill me in.”

“What?” He’s gaping at me. That’s funny, too, especially if you know Percy. “You shifted, you… You were a goddamn panther. Mia did something and brought you back.”

“Mia?” I mutter.

“Mia, yeah. You know. The girl you’re in love with?”

I blink. “You’re mistaken. It’s Ophelia I’ve pledged my loyalty to, that I—”

“Are you listening to yourself?” Percy sounds disgusted. “Pledged loyalty? What is this, a medieval drama? Do you care for this Ophelia? Do you love her?”

“I don’t see how that matters,” I say stiffly.

“Of course it does. Because you don’t love her. Do you?”

I open my mouth to set him straight but I can’t. “No,” I whisper.

“So why do you spend so much time with her? Why did you tell her not to let us into your room?”

“What? I never said that. But…” Something in my mind twists. “she knows what is best for me.”

Percy throws his hands up in the air. “Know what? That’s such bullshit.”

“Shut up, Percy.” I rub my hands over my face. “Dammit.”

“You look like shit.”

“Thanks, Percy. It warms my heart to hear that.”

“At least they cleaned you up. You were covered in dirt and blood. You’re not hurt?”
