Phillip laughed humourlessly behind her. “You’re not going to do what I want.” He nodded to himself.

“Phillip, we are. It just takes time.”

Phillip snorted.

I didn’t like the look in his eyes.

I didn’t like the way he’d suddenly stopped shaking.

Like he’d accepted something.

“Maya,” I uttered.

In seconds, everything went to hell.

Talon bellowed Maya’s name and started running. We followed just as Phillip pushed the needle in and injected our Maya,myMaya, with something. Phillip let go of her, smiling as she dropped to her hands and knees. Maya’s wide, fearful gaze lifted to us as she gasped. Her hand lifted to grip at her chest before she rolled to her side.

“No” was roared.

It was either Talon or me or all of us.

Shots were fired, and a running Phillip fell, but all I could do was stare at Maya, her hand stretching out to us before she’d slumped to the ground and her eyes closed.

CHAPTERFIVE

TEXAS

Her heart stopped.

She died.

He’d killed her, and now he was dead, and I couldn’t make him pay.

She just wanted to help people.

She wanted to heal.

He’d made her body shut down.

He took her breath. Her pulse. Her light.

In those moments, I’d wanted to go with her.

In those moments, my heart had cracked before it shattered.

I’d felt it hard, so hard it took me to my knees as I gripped my head and choked on a cry that rent the night air.

People shouted. So much commotion. So much noise.

She was so still. So quiet.

I couldn’t look at her. We’d failed.

We’d lost her.

Someone dragged me to my feet, moving me back, wrapping an arm tightly around my shoulders.

“They got her breathin’, brother. They got her breathin’.” The person shook me. “Get on your ride. We’re followin’ the ambulance to the hospital.”
