Eleanor nodded. “See?”

“Shall we eat?” Logan interrupted, putting an arm around Charlie. “What’s going on?”

“He loves your sister.” Charlie grinned.

“Really?” Logan drawled, the beginning of a smile hovering around his lips. “Many things make sense now.”

Gavin handed Ellie back to Charlie. “Yes, really. Let’s eat.” And he quickly walked over to where Brooke and Lindsay were still talking. He had to touch her; he had to make sure he wasn’t dreaming any of this.

Lindsay lifted herglass filled with water. “I can’t wait to toast the two of you with real champagne, but for the moment, water will have to do. To Gavin and Brooke—I’m so happy for you.”

As everyone lifted their glasses, Lindsay leaned closer to Gavin. “So have you told Brooke how you feel about her yet?” she asked Gavin with a wink.

Gavin shook his head. “There hasn’t exactly been time. We’ve just arrived...”

“I have this wonderful idea what you should do—”

Grinning, he shook his head. “I have my own plans.”

Lindsay frowned. “Maybe you should tell me?”

“Relax, sis. I know Brooke. I know what to do.”

Sometime during dinner, Gavin disappeared. The one minute he was by her side, and the next, he’d disappeared. Brooke looked down at the lovely food Charlie had prepared; she’d been so hungry, but oh dear, the nausea was back. What was wrong with her? Last night around the same time, she’d also felt so sick.

When they were back in Alisson, she should make an appointment to see the doctor. She hadn’t been for a check-up in a while. But she’d been working hard over the past two weeks while not sleeping or eating enough. Hopefully, once things were back to normal, she’d feel her old self.

Except she didn’t think she’d ever be able to feel her old self after last night and today. Something had changed deep within her, forever. She couldn’t picture a future without Gavin in it. They hadn’t made about any plans, but she wanted to be with him, even if he didn’t want to get married.

“Brooke, sweetheart, will you come with me?”

When she looked up, Gavin was standing next to her, holding out his hand.

She put her hand in his and got up. For a moment, the room around her tilted and she grabbed hold of the chair. Oh, dear. “Sorry, I—” She bolted for the room she usually used when staying at Logan’s apartment.

Behind her, she heard quick footsteps—probably her mom or Charlie or Lindsay or all three of them, but she couldn’t be bothered—she needed to get to a toilet, and quickly.

She just made it to bathroom. What on earth was wrong with her? Afterward, her hands shaking, she washed her face and stared at her pale face in the mirror. She should make an appointment with the doctor, sooner rather than later.

When she finally left, the other three women were waiting for her on the bed.

“How are you feeling?” her mom asked.

She sat down on the bed before she leaned back against the pillows and closed her eyes. “I’m better, thanks. Just give me a minute. I haven’t slept well over the past few weeks...”

“You think that’s the only problem?” Charlie asked.

“I’ll make an appointment with the doctor when we’re back.” She opened her eyes to catch the other three women grinning and sharing a look again. She sat up. “What’s with the look? This is the second time you guys smile and look at each other. Come on, spill.”

“You haven’t been feeling well over the past few days, have you?” Lindsay asked.

“No, but as I’ve said, I’ve worked all hours and I haven’t slept enough.”

“Have you ever felt nauseous before when you’ve lost sleep while painting?”
