The four-poster bed was enormous, with finely carved posts and a purple velvet canopy. The sheets were silk, and the blankets looked like they were made of pure wool. There were toys strewn about the room, and I had to step carefully so I wouldn’t trip over them.

Sona tsked. “Somebody needs to clean up in here.”

I chuckled. “It’s not like anybody uses this room anymore.”

Except for Bancos. I walked over to the bed and kneeled, peeking under it. She huddled in the corner, her oversized ears pressed flat against her head and the coat clenched tightly in her mouth.

“Come on out, Bancos,” I whispered, trying not to scare her. “You’re not in any trouble. I just need to take that coat back.”

Bancos hesitated for a moment before slowly creeping out from under the bed. She sat down in front of me and looked up at me with her big red eyes, as if trying to figure out whether she could trust me. The sight was so comical that I couldn’t help but laugh.

“It’s okay,” I chuckled, holding out my hand. “I’m not mad.”

After a moment, Bancos slowly approached me and allowed me to stroke her head. She seemed to relax under my touch and she finally let go of the coat, which I quickly retrieved. She sat down on her hind legs and groomed herself as if nothing had happened.

Prince Maedras would never live this down. I would make sure of it.

I stood up and brushed my dress.

Sona stared at Bancos with a look of amusement on her face.

“Thank you, Bancos,” I said as I stood up. “You can go back to your friends now. If you come to my room later, I’ll give you a treat.”

She perked up at the mention of a treat and scampered out of the room.

Sona shook her head. “Those creatures are always getting into mischief. I don’t understand why they are allowed to be kept in the Aeglire.”

“They are just curious,” I chuckled. “Even the most well-behaved animal can’t help but be curious sometimes.”

Sona shrugged and followed me out of the room. As we walked back down the hallway, I couldn’t help but smile. It was good to know that even in a place as formal as the royal palace, there was still room for a little fun.

I looked at Sona. “Do you know where lady Kanna is?”

“I believe she is in her chambers, princess.” Her silver eyes looked curiously at me. “Shall I fetch her for you?”

“No, that’s okay. I’ll find her myself. Thank you.”

It must have been a horrible two days for her. I didn’t want her to wait any longer.

Sona bowed and went on her way, leaving me alone in the hallway. I observed the coat in my hands for the first time. The golden skin was soft and supple, without a single blemish. How did lady Kanna fit into this? It must be enchanted, because looking at it, Tilila wouldn’t be able to fit in it.

My hands shook slightly, but I didn’t know if it was from excitement or nervousness. As I turned left after the statue of the late king, I couldn’t help but think about what I would say to lady Kanna.

Prince Maedras glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. Before his gaze turned fiery hot when he saw the coat in my hands.

“What are you doing with that?” he demanded, his voice cold. “What are you doing here?”

I clutched the coat tighter to my chest. “I was just taking it back to lady Kanna.” I took a step back.

He took a step towards me, his gold eyes piercing through me. “Give it to me,” he said, holding out his hand.

I shook my head and took another step back. “I can’t. Lady Kanna asked me to return it to her.”

He took another step toward me, and I backed away again. We continued this dance until I bumped into the wall and had nowhere else to go. Prince Maedras stood in front of me, his hand outstretched. He was so close that I could feel his breath on my face.

“I said give it to me,” he growled.

I shook my head again and tried to push past him, but his arms circled around me, trapping me against his chest. Flinching, I closed my eyes and waited for him to do something, but he just stood there, his arms around me.
