“But I think I might retire soon. I’m not as energetic asI used to be, you know.”

“Yes, of course.” I took another sip. “I should probably retire soon as well. It’s been a long day.”

As lady Kanna left and the music swelled, I saw Prince Maedras making his way towards me with a determined look in his eyes.

I squared my shoulders and raised my chin, preparing myself for his approach.

He walked up to me with a confident stride, stopping just a few feet away. Despite the black mask on his face, I saw the amusement in his gold eyes.

“Princess,” he said, inclining his head in a slight bow. “I believe this dance is mine.”

He held out his hand, and I hesitated for a moment before placing my hand in his. He led me onto the dance floor, and we joined the other couples who were already dancing.

The music started, and Prince Maedras led me through the steps. I followed his lead effortlessly. We moved around the floor, our bodies close together. The heat of his body and the touch of his hand on my waist were electric.

I tried to concentrate on the steps, but it was difficult with him so close to me.

“I didn’t know you could dance like that,” he said, as he pulled me closer to him.

I leaned in. “There’s a lot you don’t know about me,” I whispered in his ear.

“I would like to know more,” he said, his voice husky.

I looked up at him, and our eyes locked. In his eyes, I saw hunger. But I also saw something else.

Something that made my heart race and my stomach flutter.

I tore my gaze away from his and looked down at the floor. He was good. Fantastic even at playing games. But I hadn’t forgiven him yet.

“For your information, Elvish dances are quite popular in Midar.”

“Is that so?” he said, his eyebrow raised in curiosity. “And what else is popular where you come from?”

I thought for a moment, trying to think of something that would be appropriate to say. Telling him that the people cursed him behind his back probably wasn’t the best idea.

“Well,” I began. “Reinventing dance is quite popular. So this dance.” He twirled me around. “Also has a Midarian version of it.”

“Why would you do that?” His eyes narrowed in confusion. “This dance is perfect the way it is.”

He spun me, and I chuckled. “Maybe,” I said. “But sometimes it’s fun to change things up and try something new. That’s the only way you can grow and improve.”

He grinned at me, and a smile appeared on my face.

“I think I would like to see this Midarian dance,” he said. “Perhaps you can show me sometime?”

“Perhaps,” I replied, noncommittal. “What was that about with Lord Macinto?”

“You are my wife. The first dance of the night is always for my wife.”

“I’m not your wife yet,” I said, as he twirled me again.

“But you will be.” He looked down at me, his eyes dark. “And when you are, I will make sure that you never regret it.”

A shiver ran down my spine. I knew he was right. We would be married soon. And when we were, there would be no turning back. I swallowed hard and looked away from him. This was a game to him. A game that I couldn’t lose.

“It’s not in my nature,” I replied, as he chuckled. “You realize I have a name, right?”

“Of course.” A coy smile appeared on his lips. “But I prefer to think of you as my wife. It has a certain ring to it, don’t you think? Wife.”
