“Thank you for that. I don’t want her to worry.”

I opened it. The texture of the paper was thick and creamy, and the ink was a deep black. The words were written in a flowing script that was both elegant and intimidating.

I scanned the invitation. As Souhir had said, it was an invitation for potential brides to meet the Caid.

The date was tomorrow.

I folded it back up and placed it on the table.

“It’s just as I thought. A formality. But it’s rather interesting.”

“What is?”

I looked at Souhir “They have invited us to his residency in the mountains.”

“Why is that interesting?”

“It’s a secluded place. Few people go there. The Lunja will not be there either. They also insisted we wear formal clothing. This is a test.”

Souhir frowned. “A test?”

“I’m not sure,” I admitted. “But I think it has something to do with being able to adapt to different situations. They want to see if we can handle being in a place that is not familiar to us.”

“What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to go. I think it’s important that we show them we’re willing to try. What are you going to wear?”

“I don’t know.” She sighed as she leaned back in her chair. “But I suppose I will have to find something appropriate.”

“I can help you look,” I offered. “After all, we’re in this together.”

“I was thinking about a more modern piece.”

“That won’t do. You need to look like a proper Lunja bride. We don’t want to give them any reason to doubt our sincerity. Wear something formal and make sure you’re comfortable in it. We don’t want to be tripping all night.”

“All right.” Souhir grimaced. “I’ll see what I can do.”

“Good,” I said, pleased. “I’ll do the same. You should wear that peach-colored dress of yours. Winter colors are in fashion, but the Lunja prefer bright colors.”

Bright colors to show off their wealth, I thought, but said nothing.

“What are you going to wear? The baby blue one?” Souhir teased.

Making a face, I shook my head. “No, I was thinking of the navy one.”

Her eyes sparkled with amusement. “The one that makes you look like a female version of your father?”

“If you must know, yes.” I dryly replied.

“Why not the other one?”

“This one is handmade, and the fabric is of better quality. I have to risk it. I’ll combine it with some gold jewelry. That might soothe the Caid.”

“All right.” Souhir nodded. “I think that’s a good plan.” Her amusement faded as she grew thoughtful. “You’re very calm about this.”

“I’m scared out of my mind. But what choice do we have?”

Souhir’s lips quirked up in a half-smile. “None,” she said, her voice soft.
