Melissa

“I can’t believe she wanted to share her ice cream with you,” I tease Caden.

Giving me a sly grin, he winks and says, “I have that effect on women.”

“Is that so?”

“Yup.” He leans in and quickly pecks my lips, smearing chocolate fudge over my lips where my baby girl has been feeding him the rest of her treat.

“Ass,” I whisper as he hands me a napkin. There is something seriously fucking hot about seeing this tattooed tough guy at my daughter’s mercy though. Whatever she wants he gives it to her within reason. More ice cream ended up on his face than in his mouth, but he didn’t get annoyed at all, he just laughed.

“You should probably get that cleaned up.”

I watch in awe as he wipes down Mikayla’s tiny hands with wipes and checks the front of her shirt, telling her, “Want you to be all clean when you see your dad.”

My heart melts. I am sure this is difficult for him, being here with us to meet Dray. I want to say something to him but don’t get the chance. He is so gentle with her. Before we even left to come, he was double checking to make sure we had everything she could possibly need in her bag, just as a dad would. As Dray should be doing. I know I took that away from him by moving so far away, but I didn’t think he’d come here. I didn’t think he would even care considering what I thought to be true about him.

We’re at the park not even ten minutes when a police cruiser pulls into the lot and out comes Dray.

He glares at me when he notices Caden is here.Shit, maybe I should have mentioned that when I texted him. Caden told me he would send someone to watch for me, but instead I asked if he could come himself.

I probably should have kept my mouth shut. It’s just that I love being with him. Not to mention I am nervous about seeing Dray again. I probably should have brought Anara, but I wasn’t thinking.

“Melissa, what’s he doing here?” Dray demands angrily.

“He’s here with me, Dray, you’re here to spend time with your daughter.”

I watch Mikayla dump sand down her shirt and smile.

“Why don’t you leave, let me have time with my family,” he snarls at Caden.

“Your daughter is right there, why don’t you back out of my face, and spend time with her. You got a problem with me? Take it up with me when the kid ain’t around. She doesn’t need to see her father being a jackass,” Caden snaps back at him, quietly so Mikayla doesn’t hear.

Right now, Dray is making himself look like an ass, and it’s making me second guess everything about him. I feel like I never really knew the man I made a child with.

Chapter 24

Slammer

Dray finally stalks off and bends down to Mikayla, who finally notices him. She lets out a loud screech, “Daddy!”

My heart twists at hearing her say that, I know it shouldn’t, she’s not my daughter, butfuck,I wish she was.

“Thank you for being so good about him getting in your face,” Melissa says quietly to me as we sit on the picnic tables away from Dray and Mikayla.

“He might not like me, and I get it. I don’t like him either, but I respect him as Mikayla’s dad, and she doesn’t need to see two grown ass men fighting like idiots.”

She smiles, and it makes me want to kiss her, but I don’t. I’m trying to be a fucking respectful fuck right now in front of Dray, but it’s killing me. Melissa grabs my hand and gives me a squeeze as we continue to watch the father daughter duo play in the sand.

An hour later, Dray carries Mikayla to us and passes her over to Melissa without even looking in my direction.

“I get you’re still pissed and don’t want to talk with me yet, I get it. But I have next weekend off and I was hoping you’d let me have her for the weekend.”

I look to Melissa and her eyes widen. “Yeah, that um, that would be fine. She’d love that.”

“Good, thanks.” He chews his lip and sighs. “We still need to talk too, and I’m hoping you’ll let me do that.”
