“May I ask what you two talked about earlier?”
Rodney arched a brow. “Being a little nosy, aren’t we?”
Selena narrowed her eyes. “Not if it concerns me.”
“Owen merely asked about our childhood. He also asked about the circumstances around your engagement.”
“What did you tell him?” Dread hit her stomach like a pile of rocks.
“The truth. The man deserves it, and from his reaction, he was disgusted with his actions, and I believe he is truly remorseful. For your sake and Owen’s, I hope he never remembers.”
She silently agreed.
Owen entered the next minute. “The groom is preparing your horse.”
“Thank you. Goodbye, dearest.” Rodney kissed Selena on the cheek. “Goodbye, Owen.”
“Have a safe journey.”
Owen turned to her. “What a splendid evening. Your brother is an upstanding chap. And he was most informative.”
“He told me.” She frowned.
“Are you upset that I asked about you? I know it must seem suspicious, but you have not been very forthcoming.”
How could she argue with the truth?
“I am not trying to go behind your back, Selena. I just want to get to know you better.” He stepped closer. As usual, he did not reach for her. Owen treated her like a skittish pony, afraid that she might bolt at a moment’s notice.
She sighed. “I am not mad.” Just annoyed at her brother.
“Good, because Rodney told some amusing stories from when you two were growing up.”
That brought a smile to her face. “Nothing too embarrassing, I hope.”
“Not in the least.” He smirked.
Some of the tension eased with their light banter. Selena studied Owen. His dinner jacket fit properly. Tom must have noticed the ill-fit of his master’s clothes and rectified the situation. He cut a dashing figure in his suit. There was the barest hint of a shadow of a beard, which added to Owen’s new charm. Her gaze went upward until their eyes met.
“Would you care to join me for a game of chess?” he asked.
Right now, her life felt like a chess game. There were any number of moves available, each with its own unique outcome. She looked at her opponent and decided to take a chance.
