“What are you going to do?”

Owen refocused on his friend. “About what?”

“About Selena.”

“Nothing for now.” Owen refilled his glass. “I need to put all my energy toward finding these men. Selena isn’t going anywhere.” He hoped.

“I am here for whatever you need.”

“Thank you. You are a good friend, Bran.”

The other man just smiled before taking his leave. Owen remained in the library long after the sun had set. He didn’t go in for dinner. Food was the last thing on his mind, plus he wasn’t ready to face Selena. He went to bed that night with a heavy heart and a pounding headache. Once again, he had made the mistake of drinking too much. That was his last thought before drifting into oblivion.

No, wait! What are you doing? Stop!

The cry was ripped from his throat as he sat up in bed, the overwhelming sense of wanting to flee strong. Owen blinked a few times, trying to remember that he was safe in bed. The sheets clung to his damp body. The door across the room swung open as Selena rushed in.

“What’s the matter? I heard shouting.” She looked around but saw nothing amiss.

“It was a nightmare. I’m sorry for disturbing you.”

Owen brought his knees up and rested his arms on them, exhaustion sweeping over him as he bowed his head. The bed shifted as Selena sat next to him.

“Should I send for the doctor?” She put a hand on his arm.

“No, thank you. I just need a few moments to collect myself.” Owen’s breathing slowed. A shiver went down his body as his skin cooled. Selena found a blanket and wrapped it around his bare shoulders. “Thank you.”

“Do you want me to leave?”

She had a downward expression, as if she was waiting for him to dismiss her.

“I would like you to stay.”

Selena nodded.

“It was a memory. That’s what I was shouting about, not really a nightmare.”

“What was it?”

Owen tried to recall what or whom he had been yelling at. “I was in a place outdoors. I’m not sure if it was in England or somewhere else. There were two other men with me.”

“Do you know who they are?”

“I don’t know who they are now, but in my memory, we are arguing about something. Both men looked cross. The one diverts my attention from his companion. We continue to talk, then I hear something behind me. It’s the other bloke. He has something in his hand. He’s coming toward me with it raised above his head like he is getting ready to strike.” Owen flinches.

“Then what?”

“Nothing. That’s when I woke up.”

“Do you think you were in New Zealand?”

“Possibly. We were all wearing uniforms, so it would make sense.”

“Do you think you would recognize them if you saw them again?”

That was a good question. “I don’t know.” Owen groaned. “Every time I think I am one step closer to figuring all this out, something else jumbles up the mess.”

Selena squeezed his arm reassuringly. “It will all work out.”
