“What do you mean? If we mined the gold, like you said, it has to be somewhere.”

“Barrows thinks you stashed it somewhere and planned to go back and keep it for yourself.”

That sounded like something the old Owen would have done. Double cross his partners then take all the profit for himself. That would answer why he had written Longfellow the letter, explaining everything. He could turn in the rest of the gang, then somehow get the gold at a later time, keeping it all for himself.

“Why does Barrows believe I have the gold?”

“Because he had me and a mate steal the package from your wife, and it contained several ounces of gold.”

At the mention of Selena, Owen snapped and punched Striker square in the nose. The man let out a howl of pain. “You and Barrows accosted my wife?” He laid another blow to the man’s jaw.

“Barrows figures you have the rest of the gold. He said he was going to pay you a call and get what he deserved.”

“When did he tell you this?”

“This afternoon.”

A knot formed in his stomach. “Does he know where I live?”

“Yes.”

Owen turned to Longfellow and Bran. They must have thought the same thing.

“Go,” Longfellow said. “I can take care of this bloke. I’ll take him to the police, then I’ll come straight to your house.”

“Bring backup,” Bran yelled as they rushed off.

Selena, hold on.Owen said it over again as the carriage raced down the streets. He prayed he was not too late. If something happened to her, he would never forgive himself.
