“I see you’ve met.”

TJ snorted, giving me a look that said this wasn’t finished. I made a show of tucking my gun back into my thigh holster.

Grant gave a disgusted sigh. “Rhys, it looks like you were just as welcoming as I expected you to be.”

“He’s—”

“I was—”

TJ and I both spoke at the same time.

Grant shook his head, then turned his attention to TJ. “What the hell are you doing out here?”

“I got bored.”

“You were told to stay in the house.”

“The barn is off-limits,” I added.

Grant frowned. “Not if I send him out here to get chores done.”

TJ glared at him. “I’m not here to work for you.”

I huffed. “There’s plenty of shit to make him do on the rest of the ranch. The barn is mine.”

Grant glared at me with a look that said we’d be discussing that later, but he didn’t push it in front of TJ.

“You can’t just wonder around on your own. If you’re going to do that, there’s no point in us being here to protect you.”

“I’m not the one that said I needed protection.”

Grant looked ready to explode. “I don’t give a fuck about that. You’re here, and your father’s paying me to keep you safe. If I have to lock your ass up to accomplish my goal, that’s exactly what I’ll do.”

“I think that sounds like a good plan.”

TJ scowled at me.

“Clearly we need to go over the rules of this ranch again,” Grant said.

“I heard your rules. I just don’t intend to obey them.”

“Then things are going to get ugly.”

TJ rolled his eyes. “I’ll go back to the stupid house, but I’m not going to sit around all day. That’s not an option for me. When I get restless, I get murdery. You don’t want me to be cooped up while feeling murdery.”

“You don’t want me to call your father and tell him what a problem we’re having with you.”

TJ rolled his eyes. “Go ahead and tattle. It’s exactly what my father expects.”

TJ walked out the door. I didn’t want the bitter tone in his voice when he spoke about his family to make me feel sorry for him, but I couldn’t help it. I knew what it felt like to be rejected by your father.

“You and I are going to get straight on the rules too,” Grant said. “But I’ve got to introduce this son of a bitch to the rest of the crew first.”

“I’m as clear as I need to be.”

“No, you’re not.”

I stared at Grant as he left. I wanted this safehouse business to work out for him, for all of us, but if I had to put up with arrogant hitmen like TJ, I wasn’t sure I would last.
