Matt pulled out his phone from his suit pocket and checked the screen. ‘It’s the hotel,’ he said with a frown. Beth watched him answer the call, nodding, and muttering the occasional, ‘Right’ into the phone, as his expression morphed into one of concern. This didn’t bode well.

She extricated herself from his hold. Once again, it seemed they were destined never to be together – even though it probably wasn’t the ideal moment to be getting frisky.

‘Tell him to wait there, I’ll be right down.’ Matt ended the call and any brief hope of them resuming kissing. ‘Freddie Wood is in reception, asking for Megan.’

Of all the things Beth expected him to say, that wasn’t one of them.

Her insides did a double-flip – and not in a good way. ‘For real?’

Matt nodded. ‘What the hell are we going to do? If we barge next door and announce that Megan’s husband is downstairs, all hell’s going to break loose.’

‘We can’t let that happen.’ Beth frantically tried to think. This was a disaster, what was the man thinking? ‘It’s probably better if I go downstairs and see what he wants. After all, I’m the one who contacted him. Can you stay up here and keep watch?’

‘Fine, but if he’s here to cause trouble then call me, okay? I’ll be right down.’

‘Don’t worry, I will.’ Beth unlocked the bathroom door. ‘Should we warn them? We don’t want to walk in on anything intimate.’

‘More intimate than Megan in her underwear?’

‘Fair point. Follow me.’ Beth opened the door and averted her eyes as she crossed the bridal suite. Even then, she could see Megan and Zac on the bed, sitting crossed-legged, deep in conversation. ‘Don’t mind us, we’re just… er… just getting a glass of water,’ she said, forgetting there was a jug of water on the dressing table. ‘Sparkling. From the bar. Won’t be long.’ She felt like Hugh Grant inFour Weddings and a Funeralwhen he was trying to sneak out of the bridal suite without being seen by the bride and groom bonking like rabbits on the bed. ‘Don’t forget the key,’ she hissed to Matt, as they shot out of the room into the safety of the hallway, which was still full of Zac’s family.

‘What’s happening?’ Chris demanded.

‘Is the wedding cancelled?’ chipped in Gemma.

‘No news, guys.’ Matt locked the door behind him and folded his arms, guarding the entrance like a really hot bouncer.

Beth ignored the barrage of overlapping questions being yelled at her, and ran down the hallway towards the stairs leading to the lobby. Hopefully, no one would follow her.

She spotted Freddie Wood immediately, recognising him from his Facebook profile picture. He was a handsome arty type, with long Harry Styles hair and an impressive set of angular cheekbones. She shot over to him.

‘Come with me,’ she whispered, hooking her arm though his and leading him into the quiet of the adjacent museum.

He looked alarmed, but to his credit, didn’t challenge her and allowed himself to be taken into the dark space.

Once away from prying eyes, she let go of him. ‘Sorry, I didn’t want anyone to see you. I’m Beth, Megan’s sister.’

Freddie’s confused expression lifted. ‘Ah, right, the woman who sent me a message about getting an annulment?’

‘That’s me.’

‘No need.’ He opened his arms, as if expecting a round of applause.

‘What do you mean, no need? Of course there’s a need, a great big fat need. Megan’s getting married today. For real this time.’

‘That’s why I’m here.’

A horrible thought occurred. A man wouldn’t travel all the way to Cornwall for no good reason. ‘Look, if you’re here to cause trouble, or stop the wedding—’

‘Whoa, whoa, I’m not here to cause trouble.’

Beth frowned at him. ‘Then why are you here?’

‘To give you this.’ He handed her a large envelope. ‘Annulment papers.’

Beth sighed. ‘They were supposed to be submitted thirty days ago. They’re no use to us today.’

‘They don’t need submitting. The annulment was done eight years ago, the day after the wedding.’
