Beth felt herself frown. ‘She didn’t tell me.’

‘She didn’t know.’

‘How could she not know?’

‘It was a surprise.’ He picked up his beer and took a long sip, which drew Beth’s eyes to his lips. ‘Apparently, they had a tearful conversation on Sunday night about how much they missed each other, so he decided to surprise her by flying out there today.’

‘Oh, right.’ Beth booted up her laptop, rather alarmed by the news and struggling to drag her eyes away from Matt’s mouth. ‘How long does he intend to stay in Greece?’

He shrugged, making the bench seat wobble with his substantial bulk. His wide shoulders were quite distracting. ‘Who knows?’

‘But we’re supposed to be planning the wedding? We have less than seven weeks before the big day, how can he just leave like that? Doesn’t he realise how much needs organising?’

‘I think he felt seeing Megan was more important.’

‘More important than planning his own wedding?’

He gave a half-hearted shrug. ‘Love makes people do foolish things. Haven’t you ever done anything irrational in the name of love?’

‘Certainly not.’ Reaching for her wine, she took a large slug, wondering why she couldn’t quite quench her thirst. Without Zac present to soften the effect of this man-mountain, the atmosphere between them was alarmingly different. She tried to regroup. ‘I guess we could reschedule our meeting, but the venue needs to be confirmed – they won’t hold the booking past this weekend. I don’t think we can afford to wait.’

‘I agree.’ Matt took another sip of beer, and she averted her gaze so she wouldn’t be distracted by the movement of his throat when he swallowed. ‘Zac said he’s happy for us to go ahead with any ideas we come up with.’

‘So we’re just supposed to go ahead and plan a wedding without either the bride or the groom being involved?’

‘Looks that way.’

‘It’s absolutely ludicrous.’ She fanned her face, warm from the glare of the early evening sun. At least, she was pretty sure it was the sun making her warm. ‘I’ve a good mind to tell them to plan their own damn wedding. I mean, can you imagine the fallout if we get this wrong?’

He nodded. ‘We’ll never live it down.’

‘We could cause a divorce before they’ve even got married.’

He grinned. ‘At least they have a divorce lawyer on hand to deal with the split.’

She sighed. ‘I’m glad you think this is funny.’

‘I don’t, but there’s no point stressing,’ he said, reaching for his beer again. ‘It is what it is. They’ve left us to arrange their wedding, and they’ll just have to accept whatever we come up with. What other choice do they have?’

She removed her steamed-up glasses and wiped them using her cleaning cloth. ‘None, unfortunately.’

He nodded to her jacket. ‘If you’re hot, why don’t you remove your jacket?’

‘I’m perfectly capable of regulating my temperature, thank you.’

He lifted his hands in mock surrender. ‘I was only trying to help.’

‘Well, don’t.’ Shoving her glasses back on, she took another sip of wine, trying not to give in to his suggestion and remove her jacket, however much she wanted to. ‘I suppose we might as well proceed with the presentations.’

He raised an eyebrow. ‘Presentations?’

‘You know, the presentations for our respective pitches?’

His gaze turned puzzled. ‘We’re not negotiating the purchase of an oil company.’

‘No, but we’ve been asked to come up with ideas for the big day.’

‘Ideas, yeah, not a flipping…’ he gestured to her laptop, ‘marketing presentation.’
