‘I suppose we should be flattered.’ She went over to a line of suits and selected a peacock-blue jacket with large lapels. ‘Who wants to be an off-the-peg size anyway?’

Matt did. He’d give anything to be a regular size.

Leah tried on the jacket, which hung off her like a tent. ‘How do I look?’

‘Like a Butlin’s entertainment officer.’

She did a twirl. ‘Hi-de-hi, campers!’

Laughing, he shrugged off his Harrington jacket and threw it over a chair. ‘Have a seat, Mum. We may be a while.’

His mum sat down, wincing as she did so.

Concern tightened Matt’s insides. ‘Is your back playing up again?’

‘A bit,’ she said, forcing a smile. ‘Nothing a hot bath won’t cure. Has Megan chosen the bridesmaid’s dress yet?’

‘Lily’s making Poppy’s dress. Megan has left her sister to choose her own maid of honour dress.’

Leah came over. ‘Ah, yes, the mysterious sister.’

Matt raised an eyebrow. ‘Why mysterious?’

Leah shrugged. ‘You’ve hardly said anything about her.’

‘That’s because I don’t know anything about her. Other than she’s a divorce lawyer and she’s been roped into planning the wedding, same as me.’

‘That’s it?’

‘That’s it.’

His phone pinged with another message from Beth.

Have some free time today if you want to touch base on wedding plans?

He was about to reply saying he was busy at the moment, but he accidentally pressed the video-chat icon. The next thing he knew, Beth’s face appeared on the screen. Shit.

‘That was quick,’ she said, her face zooming into focus. ‘I wasn’t expecting a call right away.’ He could see a large sash window behind her and stark white walls. He assumed she was in her office. ‘Sorry I haven’t been in touch, it’s been a crazy week.’

He moved away from his sister, chastising himself for his error and not wanting to be overheard. He noticed dark circles under Beth’s eyes, almost hidden behind her glasses. ‘Everything okay?’

‘Sure,’ she said, unconvincingly, but then paused and let out a deep sigh. ‘Actually, not really.’

He moved into the secluded alcove. ‘Anything I can help with?’

‘No, but thanks for asking. Have you spoken to Zac?’

‘I spoke to him last night, and he’s fine with your ideas for the wedding. Even the dressing-up bit.’ Something which still confounded him.

‘You weren’t expecting him to agree?’ Beth tilted her head, allowing a tendril of hair to fall across her cheek.

‘He’s obviously more in love with your sister than I realised.’

A ghost of a smile passed across her lips. ‘He’s smitten.’

‘Crazy, huh?’ Then he noticed that Beth’s concerned expression had returned. ‘Are you sure you don’t want to tell me what’s wrong? Is it about the wedding? Is Megan having second thoughts?’

‘It’s not that,’ she said, shaking her head. ‘Megan’s desperate to marry Zac, nothing’s going to stop her.’
