It was the first time he’d seen her out of a suit, and he wondered if that was a contributory factor. Having said that, he wouldn’t describe her outfit as casual. Her hair was tied up, her fitted jacket was buttoned-up and her dark jeans and low-heeled boots were pristine. Everything was neat, and neutral, and understated. A contrast to the fiery temper he knew lurked beneath the tranquil exterior.

She glanced back. ‘Did you manage to speak to Zac?’

‘I did. He has no opinion about wedding cakes.’

‘Helpful.’

Matt gave her a wry look. ‘I thought so, too.’

They reached a curved wall filled with blown-up images of various cake designs, everything from traditional white to shocking pink. Simple and elegant, to gaudy and elaborate. He had no idea so many designs existed.

Beth peered at the photos. ‘Any idea when he’s coming back from Greece?’

‘No, and I can’t say I’m happy about it.’

She turned to him. ‘You’re not?’

‘I’m pissed off beyond belief. Aren’t you?’

‘Yes,’ she said, seemingly surprised by his answer. ‘But I’ve given up trying to talk to my sister about it, she just gets upset. She says he’s stressed enough about losing his passport and doesn’t need me putting pressure on him to come home.’

‘Not exactly fair when we’re left organising their wedding, is it?’

‘My sentiments exactly.’ She turned back to the photos.

They were actually agreeing? Wonders would never cease.

Matt glanced at her profile. She had a cute nose. ‘On a positive note, they’ve bought the rings from a local jeweller, so that’s another item you can tick off your list.’

She turned to him. ‘Are you about to make another sarcastic comment about my spreadsheet?’

He grinned. ‘Your spreadsheet has turned out to be very useful. I stand corrected. And I was impressed by the private website, too.’ Any scepticism he’d felt about the need for a wedding website had disappeared when he’d taken a look at the content. Beth had added information about the venue, the itinerary for the day, travel arrangements and a comments section to add any dietary requirements. There were also links to local hotels, taxi firms and the gift list. ‘Did you really create it all by yourself?’

She gave a little shrug. ‘I used an existing template and then added the relevant info.’

‘It must have taken you hours.’

‘One of the few benefits of not sleeping,’ she said, with a sigh. ‘It’s amazing how much you can get done in the middle of the night. Although setting up the password proved a bit tricky.’

She tried to make light of it, but she was clearly struggling with the amount of stress being loaded on her. ‘Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun.’

‘It’s not,’ she said, turning back to the photos. ‘But it’s done now and hopefully it’ll help the day run smoothly.’

‘I’m sure it will, you’ve done a great job. Thank you.’

He couldn’t be sure, but he thought he saw a faint blush in her cheeks.

‘What about this one?’ he said, pointing to a cake decorated with playing cards and dice. ‘Marriage is a gamble, after all.’

Beth smiled. ‘High stakes and huge losses. As I know only too well, doing my job.’ She pointed to another design. ‘Why would anyone want cricket stumps on their wedding cake?’

Matt shrugged. ‘Maybe to show how bowled over they are?’

She surprised him by laughing.

He’d never heard her laugh before. It was a nice sound.

She pointed to another cake. ‘A tiger?’
