Once in Wynonna’s SUV on our way to pick up the sisters, I mention how silly I feel buying clothes that I’ll only wear for a month.

“Well, you’ll need comfy stuff even after the baby. Besides, there are plenty of poor chicks who could use sexy stuff when you’re done with it.”

“It’s not really sexy.”

“Your boobs are hardcore coming on to me,” she says, and I recall how Silas checked them out all morning. “I don’t mind. A woman’s body is a lovely thing. I’m not looking to fuck one. But I can admire a chick’s curves.”

Instead of dwelling on her compliment, I reply, “I never think to give anything away. My stuff is always old.”

“Well, there’s a club slut who got knocked up by one of the guys. Don’t know which one,” Wynonna says before adding, “She wasn’t with Nomad, so it’s not his. She liked to bounce on a few younger guys’ sticks. Anyway, she’s having the baby. I bet she’d like your boob-positive shirt when you’re done with it.”

Tugging up the fabric, I worry I’m flashing too much cleavage. Wynonna laughs at my reaction and pulls into the driveway of a small Spanish-style home.

“Yazmin lives here. The plan was for Selene to move in, too, but my brother’s dick complained. Now, Yazmin is here alone with her little dog, Havana.”

The sisters exit the house, wearing matching blue jeans and black T-shirts.

“Am I overdressed?” I ask Wynonna who checks her phone.

“Is that a real question?”

“I’ve never gone to a spa.”

“You look like a sexy preggo. Stop worrying. Your insecurities will rub off on the sisters who will get weird. I can’t handle three high-maintenance bitches at one time. Especially after what happened to Gayle.”

Remembering her one-footed frenemy, I smirk. Wynonna turns around and grins at the sisters as they slide into the back seat.

“How’s the dog?” she asks Yazmin.

“She doesn’t like when I leave her.”

Wynonna snorts. “Precious.”

“She takes the puppy to the office,” Selene explains.

“That’s good,” Wynonna replies. “With all those poonhound assholes around the office building, you’ll need an attack dog for protection.”

The sisters laugh while Wynonna pulls the SUV back on the road. When I just look at her, she grins.

“Havana is one of those lap dogs.”

“She’s a Shih Tzu,” Yazmin says softly as she studies her phone. “Goose found her for me.”

Wynonna smirks at something I don’t get. “There’s a retirement community on the county’s east side, where all the old folks breed their tiny dogs to make extra cash. Those fancy breeds aren’t cheap.”

“Goose got Havana for free, though,” Yazmin says, making Wynonna laugh. “What?”

“Nothing. I’m starting to suspect Goose might have a crush on you.”

I turn around to look at Yazmin and Selene who eye one another. Wynonna snickers to herself as if loving how no one gets her coded message.

“I considered inviting my stepmom to the spa,” Wynonna explains as we reach the highway. “Callie isn’t much older than me, and she always has her shit together. Super tight from all the Pilates. I thought she might intimidate you three.”

“We’ve spent time with Callie before,” Selene says in the soft way she says everything.

Wynonna smirks and glances at me. I realize she was worried I’d be intimidated. Grinning at her, I silently thank her for making me comfortable.

“Callie’s cool, though,” Wynonna continues. “Once a month, we get our nails done and talk shit about my dad. It’s cathartic.”
