Gripping her arm I pull her along with me, stopping just before the dance floor and wait for her to gulp down her Martini as glasses aren’t allowed on there. “What is wrong with you?” Kellie asks sternly.

“I’ve come for a night out with my best friend and to be honest, I don’t like the look of the other one.”

She swallows what’s left of her drink and slams it on a high table. “He’s cute.”

“I’m not on the pull,” I say, letting her know exactly what’s happening here.

“And we don’t all have a sexy as fuck man waiting at home either.” She smiles wickedly then drags me onto the floor dancing until we drop.

Every time we stop to get more drinks those guys are there, hanging around. I can’t understand why they don’t take the hint. One of them gives me the creeps more and more as the night goes on. When I tell Kellie my concerns though she dismisses it; only because she thinks the other one is cute. I ignore him while Kellie smiles and flirts with his friend. After another trip to the ladies, I make the decision to stop drinking. Kellie is getting drunker by the second and I need to look out for her. I switch us to bottles of water. They don’t look like the type of guys that will take no for an answer and leave it there.

The next couple of hours go by without any events and by the time the night is over my feet are killing me.

“Shall I call Troy, for a lift?” I ask as we leave the pub. I’ve already tried to get us a taxi but there aren’t any. It’s Friday and it’s a busy night.

“You know if you want to see him sooner you only had to say?” Kellie slurs a little while I sigh at her, resting my hand on my cocked hip.

“That’s not the point. Look at the amount of people waiting for taxis.” I take out my phone and tap into my app. “This is telling me it’ll be an hour before it arrives. An hour Kell. I’m not hanging around in town for an hour.” I quickly tap out a message to Troy, moving away from the crowd a little in case I have to ring him. I haven’t spoken to Troy since the last text I replied to and of course I didn’t answer his call.

Hey,any chance of that lift. We’re at Queens and it’s a stupidly long wait for a taxi. If you can't, it's fine, I’ll figure something out.

It doesn’t take longto get a reply. I have a feeling he’s been waiting for me. It isn’t too late, it’s just past midnight.

Stay where you are.I'll be there soon.

As I turnaround to tell Kellie that Troy’s on his way, she has her tongue down the guy's throat. “Kell?”

“They look a bit busy to me.” I think it’s Stuart that answers me.

“Great.”

“You know I have a taxi on the way, we can share if that’s what you want,” His eyes darken and moves closer, dragging a finger down my arm. I shrug away from him and step further away. He follows me as I stupidly back myself against a wall. His hand moves to my face, wrapping his fingers around my jaw, gently at first, “Just a kiss, that’s all I want.”Something in his eyes tells me he won’t take no for an answer though.

“No.” I tell him firmly trying to bat his hand away, his arm tenses and his grip tightens on my face. “Kell!” I shout through him squeezing my jaw but get I nothing, so with my other hand on his chest, I try to push him away.

I feel his hand on my skin, his fingers trailing upwards. “You know you shouldn’t wear dresses like this if you don’t want attention.” I narrow my eyes at him. The cheeky fucker.

“Get away from me.” My fingernails dig into his arm, but it doesn’t stop him. “I can wear whatever I fucking want.”I grind out angrily.

His other hand clutches my thigh, fingernails biting into my skin until I cry out. I grab his wrist, he doesn’t release me, instead he crashes his lips against mine, they’re hard and taste disgusting. I attempt to push him away again, but he doesn’t budge. I lift my knee and shove it upwards and soon find my target. Suddenly releasing me he stumbles away, cupping his balls in his hands. “Argh. You bitch.”

“Get the fuck away from me.” I yell again. “Kellie!” I turn away to shout at my best friend, I’m not sure what happens after that. The guy is knocked to the floor, I assume the bouncers have seen him or heard me yelling, but as I look up Troy is towering over him, his face like thunder. Kellie steps up beside me, her chin almost on the floor from shock.

He yanks me behind him so I’m not in the firing line if he gets up again. Clutching the jumper that Troy is wearing, I look around him to see the bastard scrambling away. His arm goes around me, his expression fierce, but softens a little as he sets his eyes on me. “Get in the car. Both of you.”

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

TROY

The ride home is quiet. Emily sits in the passenger seat staring out of the window while Kellie sits in the back with her eyes closed. When it’s time to drop Kellie off, Emily gets out and hugs her, they exchange a few words, then once Kellie is inside, Emily gets back in the car, and we carry on back to the house.

I reach around her, sliding my key into the lock and open the door for her. She kicks off her shoes as she enters and leaves her handbag on the table. She doesn’t say a word as she slinks off into the sitting room. “I’ll get us a drink.” I pour whisky for myself, but I think Emily might need the smoothness of a brandy. I pour both from the bar in the other room and turn to go back to the sitting room.

The scene in front of me has me halting in the doorway. She looks so small with her legs curled up and tucked beneath her. She stares blankly at the dead fire. I wonder whether I should go to her. While she was out, I decided to pull her mother’s things out and bring them downstairs for her.

Turning her head, she places her cheek against the back cushioning of the armchair, her eyes closing as she drifts off soundly. I put both glasses down while I take the fleece throw from the back of the couch and gently lay it over her, stroking her hair softly and I lean down brushing a soft kiss on her head. A soft sigh escapes through her lips and snuggling further down into the chair I tuck the blanket around her and sit on the couch opposite her.

My phone has been next to me all night. Every time a message came through, I was itching to read it and reply. The woman has me on a constant cliff edge. I want to make her happy and I want to look after her, not that she needs it, but I’ve waited a long time for this. I’ve changed. I have no intention of hurting her again.
