When the light goes off, the eyes are huge.

And before the flashlight regains its power, a set of claw-shaped bright white teeth appear and…

“Ah!”Cullen yells as he throws his arm around me.

I let out a scream and the popcorn bowl tips over.

Cullen laughs and pulls me closer to him.

On the scream, the woman is dead.

Left on the floor of the basement missing her eyes and her tongue.

Gross.

But staring at me, Cullen’s eyes are wide.

“Asshole,” I say.

“What? I thought you liked to be scared.”

“Depends on the scare.”

“Meaning?”

“I like movies.”

“But no real life scares?”

“I don’t know, Cullen,” I say.

I look at the screen again but Cullen touches my face.

“Hey, what’s going on? Your face just dropped a little…”

“I get upset over spilled popcorn,” I say.

“Don’t lie to me, love,” Cullen whispers.

His eyes seem to change again.

“Fine. If you want to know… it’s Archer.”

Cullen’s nostrils flare. “What now?”

“He keeps leaving empty envelopes for me. Messing with me. Trying to get into my head.”

“That’s why you should be here, Jaci,” Cullen says. “That shit won’t happen here.”

“I can’t run from things,” I say.

“But I can save you from it,” he says.

Cullen jumps up and off the bed, landing on his feet.

His hands tighten into fists.

“Cullen, stop,” I say.
