This is it! This is when I-

I’m suddenly deflated.

It’s a note from Archer.

Telling me where to meet him at sunset.

It’s the exact same spot where he broke the first guitar from Cullen.

This time I don’t bring a guitar.

This time I sit on the picnic table and watch the glow of the sunset.

Colors smacking against the trees, leaving them looking like black, twisted skeletons reaching up into the air.

Then I see Archer.

He emerges from the shadows.

With his hands in his pockets.

I jump down from the table and inch behind it.

I figure at the very least I can flip the table and run away.

“You opened the envelope, sweet thing,” Archer says.

“I did.”

“You’re feeling braver now.”

“I took a chance,” I say. “I wonder how it plays out.”

“The envelope is not all I’m talking about,” he says.

He removes his hands from his pocket.

His right hand has the knife.

His left hand something that looks like a small water balloon.

“Let’s play a game, Jaci,” he says.

“I’d rather not,” I say.

“I didn’t give you a choice. Put your right hand on the table. Palm up.”

“Why?”

Archer lifts the knife up and looks at it.

I guess that’s my warning?

I put my hand on the table.

Palm up.

“Now what?” I ask. “Are you going to read my fortune?”
