“Jaci, please,” she says. “Just please. Don’t show up and try to be a hero. This place isn't likeDSC. You know that, right? But maybe you’ve already forgotten.”

I scoff and step back.

I open my arms.

“Do I look different to you, Fay?” I ask. “Huh? Do I look like some prissy bitch who thinks the world revolves around her?”

“No,” Fay says.

“So don’t accuse me of being different. Or forgetting. I haven’t forgotten a thing about this house. This street. This town.”

“I didn’t mean it like that,” Fay says. “I’m trying to drive you away. For good.”

“What happened?”

Fay stares but doesn’t say a word.

Her cigarette ash finally calls it quits and jumps from the cigarette.

It crumbles as it rushes to the floor, looking like some demolished building.

It makes me think back to two years ago when they knocked down the old department store. It had been abandoned for years. We would all dare each other to go inside. A lot of people used the building for parties. For drugs. For a lot more.

Finally some developer bought it and planned on putting some cheap housing there.

So Marty, Brie, Kae, and I all got together to watch the demolition.

Marty stole sodas from grumpy old man Lee’s corner store.

For an hour straight, Marty tried to predict when the building would collapse, wanting to act cool and claim his mind knocked it over.

Funniest part of the day was that when Marty walked away to take a pee, that’s when they blew up the building.

Why does any of this matter right now?

It doesn’t.

It’s just a random memory that hit me as I watch Fay’s cigarette ash hit the floor.

Fay brings the cigarette to her mouth and takes a drag.

“Did you at least see a doctor for that?” I ask, referring to her messed-up eye.

“A doctor?” Fay laughs. “And say what?”

“You tell me,” I say. “I’m sure you have a ton of excuses, right? You fell? You hit a doorknob? You rolled out of bed during sex? You fell out of bed while having a bad dream?”

“I think you need to watch yourself, Jaci,” Fay says.

“I need to watch myself?” I ask.

My mouth moves a little but I don’t say anything else.

Faye has no idea what I’ve been up against.
