“How fast is your heart racing right now, Jaci?” Maz asks.

“I don’t know,” I say.

Maz crouches down and plants her right hand on my left boob.

I gasp.

“I’m not into that,” I whisper.

“Neither am I,” Maz says. “Except on a dare. But I’m not feeling you up. Just stop talking.”

After a few seconds Maz nods at Birdie.

Birdie touches my shoulder. “Hey, Jaci, can you just take a deep breath for us?”

“Jaci, your heart is fucking racing,” Maz says. “You’re panicking right now.”

“Of course I am!” I yell. “You don’t know what I just saw! You don’t know what’s happening!”

I swat at Maz’s hand, knocking it away from my chest.

I hurry to stand up.

“Jaci, sit back down,” Birdie says. “You’re legit freaking out.”

“No shit, Birdie!” I yell.

“It’s okay to freak out,” Maz says. “Let us help you.”

“Help me? How can you help me?”

“We can get you something to calm you down,” Maz says.

“What? Drugs?”

Maz shrugs her shoulders. “Zazas. They help. We all take them when need be.”

“If you only knew… what…”

I blink a few times.

I suddenly feel like I’m in a dark tunnel.

And I have a flashlight smack dab in the middle of my forehead.

I can see Maz.

I turn my head and see Birdie.

I drop the water bottle.

“Shit,” Birdie says. “Maz! She’s going-”

It’s like someone snaps their fingers and everything is dark.

I can’t see. I can’t hear. I can’t feel.

Then I can again.
