Relaxed.

Focused but not.

I stay seated on the edge of the bed.

My feet dangling, not touching the floor.

Cullen sits next to me.

His feet touch the floor.

“I saw Fay with a black eye,” I say.

“Fay?”

“The woman who raised me,” I say. “She’s a stripper. We always joked and called itnursing. It wasn’t someone at work that hurt her. She’s into some dark stuff. I’m not trying to save her. I won’t go back there and try to either. It was just hard to see that.”

“I’m sorry, Jaci,” Cullen says.

He slides an arm around me and pulls me toward him.

I look down and imagine my mouth moving, opening his jeans, taking his-

“You belong here,” he says.

“I keep hearing that.”

“It’s true. You’re anHeir.”

“But I don’t know who my family is,” I say. “And if I find out, Archer will kill me.”

“That’s why you should just be here with me all the time. I’ll keep you safe. I’m sorry if what happened chased you back there. You never have to leave here, Jaci. This is your home now.”

“I have no home, Cullen,” I say with a smile. “I think I have to be okay with that. I just can’t believe what I saw when I went back there. Among other things…”

I swallow hard.

I’m not really lying to Cullen right now but I’m not telling him everything.

My eyes grow heavy and I begin to close them.

“I know there’s more,” Cullen whispers as he touches my hair. “I know Archer is involved in this somehow. I trust you, Jaci. You’ll talk when you’re ready.”

“I’m sleepy, Cullen,” I say. “I think I just want to sleep until tomorrow.”

“Twozazasare a good start,” he says.

Cullen then makes a move and picks me up.

He places me down with my head on a pillow and brushes his lips to my forehead.

So gentle and caring.

I smile and doze off.

Zazashave a way of making time not exist.

Because when my eyes pop open again, I don’t know if it’s been a minute or two days.
