Her painted black fingernails claw at my hand and she takes the money from me.
“There,” she says. “By the way, my name is Rosa. Text me anytime.”
She turns, pulls her hood up and walks off.
I reach into my pocket as I take a deep breath.
I am now in the possession of a handful ofzazas.
I quickly pop one into my mouth and swallow it down.
Then I walk across campus.
I let thezazawork its magic.
I pretend that my life is perfectly okay…
Chapter 45
Cullen is waiting for me after my last class.
I almost jump into his arms because I’m happy to see him.
Maz and Birdie are with me.
“We’re going to lose her,” Maz says.
“Worth it,” Birdie says.
There’s almost drool coming out of her mouth as she stares at Cullen.
“Do you two mind?” I ask.
“Leaving us to go with Cullen Doyle?” Birdie asks. “Um…”
“Just asking,” I say.
“Go,” Maz says. “Have fun. At least you know you’ll be safe with him.”
I told Maz and Birdie about the envelope and that’s why it had me all nervous this morning.
For some reason though I don’t tell them about thezazas.
I don’t know why.
Maybe I don’t want them to know what I did to get thezazas.
Which is stupid because chances are they probably boughtzazasfrom Rosa too.
It’s not that big of a deal.
I chase away those thoughts and smile at Maz and Birdie.
Then I finish running down the steps and launch myself at Cullen.
He catches me, spins me around once, and puts me down.
Somewhere inside me I want him to just grab me and kiss me. I want him to make his move, leave his mark. Stake his claim.
