We have an idea of what happened here.

An idea we both want to be wrong about.

But we both know we’re not wrong at all.

“Here, drink this,” Cullen says to Birdie. “It’s just water.”

Birdie stares at Cullen.

She doesn’t even attempt to take the water from him.

Maz grabs for the bottle of water.

“Can we be alone?” I whisper to Cullen.

“Sure, love,” he says.

There’s anger in his eyes already.

Maz holds the water bottle to Birdie’s lips.

She slowly sips it.

Water runs down her chin.

She doesn’t care.

She’s drunk and dazed.

Terrified.

“How bad, Birdie?” I whisper. “I think we need to know everything.”

Birdie shakes her head. “I can’t.”

“You can,” Maz says. “And you will. This room is trashed. You know what it looks like in here?”

I touch Maz’s shoulder. “Easy. It’s not her fault.”

“It is,” Birdie says. “This is all my fault.”

I touch Birdie’s knees and she winces.

“Birdie, it’s not,” I say. “Whatever happened, it was not your fault.”

“I came up here with him, didn’t I?”

Now my stomach feels sick.

Fuck.

“Who?” I whisper.

Birdie shakes her head.

“Please,” Maz says.

Maz’s eyes fill with tears.
