“You’re safe now,” Archer says.

He starts to turn and Birdie stands up.

She grabs his arm.

“Wait,” she says. “I don’t feel safe yet.”

“Yet?” Archer asks.

Birdie swallows hard. She takes a deep breath. It shakes the entire time.

“I want to see the body to know for sure.”

Chapter 61

“No way!” Maz yells. “I am not going to see a dead body!”

“I didn't invite you,” Birdie says in a cold voice.

“Birdie, be logical here,” Maz says. “Anything you know or see can come back and hurt you. His family isn’t going to accept this quietly. Think about the Detro family. Okay? Maybe around here it’ll just vanish. That’s how things go, right? But outside this campus…”

“I don’t care,” Birdie says.

I inch closer to Archer and grab his arm. “Is she right?”

“Of course I’m right,” Maz says.

“She is right,” Archer says. “I only wanted to tell Birdie face to face. To let her know it was over. At least this part of it.”

“You can’t let emotions get involved in these things,” Maz says. “That’s how mistakes happen. That’s how more people get hurt and more people get killed.”

“I want to see,” Birdie says. “I have to see. To heal.” She walks closer to Maz. “Please tell me you understand that.”

Maz’s eyes fill with tears. “Of course I understand it, Birdie. But I have to say this to you. I have to make sure I’m being logical and sane right now.”

“You’re the best friend I’ve ever had,” Birdie says.

The two start to hug.

I pull at Archer’s arm.

“Is this a good idea?” I whisper.

“It’s not my idea,” he whispers back. “I’m not telling anyone what to do.”

“Except me?”

“You’re theHeir, remember?” Archer fires back. “You could tell her what to do. Command her. Hit her if you have to. Want my knife?”

“Fuck off,” I growl and I push away from him.

“I want to do this right now,” Birdie says.

“Good,” Archer says. “Because then I have to finish the job.”

“What does that mean?” I ask.

Archer lifts his eyebrows.
