“Yeah, well I’m never eating anything out of your kitchen, Maz,” Birdie says.

“I don’t want you in my kitchen,” Maz says. “You’re missing a dick.”

I snort even harder and scream with laughter.

Birdie shakes her head and giggles.

“You two are fucking insane sometimes,” I say. “But I love you both. I mean that too. I love you both. I want you to know that I will always protect you. No matter what. I’m not trying to show off or whatever here, I just want you to know that. This wholeHeirthing…”

“You’re amazing, Jaci,” Birdie says.

“Tell that to Archer,” I whisper.

“That’s how things go,” Maz says. “I’m sorry.”

“I’m trying to accept it,” I say. “I feel guilty. But I don’t.”

“That’s our life,” Birdie says. “A mix of guilt and…”

“Why are we doing this?” Maz asks.

“You’re right,” I say. “I just wanted you both to know how much you mean to me. I didn’t say anything to you both but I had Cullen take me back to Fay’s. This time though I didn’t go into the house. We just stopped and looked. The place is a piece of shit. I don’t belong there. I belong here. Even if I don’t know everything yet.”

“Yet,” Maz says.

“Yet,” Birdie says.

“I guess it doesn't matter now what I find out,” I whisper.

If Archer’s gone, then nobody is going to kill me, right?

I’m supposed to feel good about that?

I feel sad over it.

Birdie throws her arms around me.

Maz joins the hug.

Now the emotions start to flood throughout my body.

I break the hug, shaking my head. “No way. I’m not crying and getting all worked up.”

“Yeah, get out of here,” Maz says.

“Go get laid again,” Birdie says. “By the guy of my dreams.”

I laugh as I leave the dorm.

Outside, it’s cold again.

I hug myself.

I send Cullen a text to come pick me up.

Then I start to walk.

As I walk, I casually look over my shoulder.
