“I’ve already done that. Plenty of times.”

“No, Archer, not with her.”

“What does that mean, Cullen? Are you really staking your claim? You really want to go to war over a piece of pussy?”

“A piece of what?” I ask. “I’m more than just my pussy!”

They both ignore me.

“You’re not ready for the war you’ll start,” Cullen says.

“With your family?” Archer asks with an evil grin.

“More than that,” Cullen says. “Jaci Ruby isn’t who you think she is.”

“Who am I then?” I ask.

Both Cullen and Archer look at me.

Cullen is the only who speaks.

“Jaci Ruby is an Heir.”

Chapter 10

“What the fuck are you talking about?” I ask Cullen. “How can I be anHeir? I’m a girl. A woman. And I don’t even know who-”

“You’re anHeir, love,” Cullen says. “That’s why you’re here.”

“I don’t believe that for a second,” I say. “There’s no way I’m any kind ofmafia royaltyor whatever the fuck you people call yourselves around here.”

“Why would I lie to you about that?” Cullen asks. “You’re creating shockwaves through the entire place right now. A femaleHeir? That’s unheard of.”

“I’m leaving,” I say. “I’m done with whatever this is. I don’t need you lying to me.” I look at Archer and point. “And I don’t need you threatening my life. You want to stab me? You want to accuse me of something I didn’t do? Fuck you. I’m fucking leaving this place.”

I start to turn and see Archer lunging for me.

Cullen jumps into his path.

I gasp and I want to scream.

All I can picture is the knife in Archer’s hand sliding into Cullen’s body.

Look, I come from a poor area and grew up poor, but I understand how hierarchies work.

If Archer stabs Cullen, then Cullen’s brother will go after Archer. And then their families will end up in a war…

“Stand back, Amatti,” Cullen growls.

Archer flashes a death stare at Cullen. “Really, Doyle? Our families have been fighting for generations. Do you really want that to continue with us?”

“Stay away from her.”

“I can’t do that. You know I can’t do that.”

“Then we’re going to have a problem. I’m protecting her. I’m claiming her.”

“Claiming me?” I ask with a laugh. “What am I - a fucking tax form or something?”
