“Doesn’t to me either,” Fay says.

“There’s so much you won’t tell me, Fay.”

“I know. I’m not supposed to tell you anything.”

“Hey, I talked to Marty. He didn’t torch my car.”

“Good. I don’t have to kill him the next time I see him.”

“I don’t know who did though,” I say. “I hope when I leave, all my issues leave too.”

“That would be nice,” Fay says. “No offense.”

“I kind of want to thank you for raising me.”

“But you kind of don’t,” Fay says. “I’m a terrible person. I should have never been in charge of you.”

“You kept me alive,” I say. “I was a baby. You were ten years old.”

“I’m not going down memory lane. Just take care of yourself, Jaci. Where you’re going is… different. It’s nothing like you’ve ever experienced. You can’t be prepared even if you try. But it’s still better than here.”

I nod.

Fay walks away.

She might be crying.

I might want to cry too.

I stand at my window and watch Fay get into a fancy convertible and drive off.

Everything about her screamsI’m a stripper.

A few seconds later, a black SUV rolls up and pulls into the spot where Fay had just been.

One of two things is about to happen.

I’m either about to leave forDSC.

Or I’m about to be killed.

Chapter 3

If you live anywhere in or near Drowningside, you know aboutDSC.

Now, here’s the deal.

Those letters have an actual meaning.

Some false sense of prestige.

To anyone with a pulse, those three letters meant one thing.

Dark Sinners College.

You weren’t going there to become the next great brain surgeon. You weren’t going there to hone your genius skills and create some kind of cancer-curing technology.

To simply put it - it was a college for those who were part of families who had power.
