“So fucking hot!” I yell.

“They just came out of the oven,” Laz says. “I blame myself for not saying something.”

The damn thing didn’t feel that hot when I picked it up.

But the gooey cheese was like lava spreading across my tongue, looking for the back of my throat.

Mattia comes back outside and hands me water.

I chew, swallow, then chug the water.

The entire scene takes less than a minute but I feel like it’s been ten hours.

“So?” Laz asks.

“Yeah, okay, it’s delicious,” I say.

“Another?”

“Fine,” I say.

I take another crescent thing and this time I slowly bite it.

Laz is a really good cook.

He knows it too.

“Mattia,” Laz says. “Go find out what’s going on in there.”

Mattia grins. “No problem.”

When Mattia goes inside, I point to the door. “What’s happening?”

“They’re talking.”

“About murder.”

“I don’t know what you mean by that.”

“Bullshit, Laz.”

“Jaci,” he growls. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

My blood runs cold.

Right. Have to be careful with what I say and who I say it too. Same with Laz. Same with everyone else.

I take another bite of the crescent thing. “This is really good.”

“I try my best,” he says. “It’s nice to have an outlet. I cook. You enjoy a little of everyone, huh?”

“What?”

“I’m just teasing,” he says. “It’s good. It’s good to see Cullen focused and relaxed. A little. And for Archer… who knows about that guy. He’s on a mission.”

“Yeah,” I say. “To kill me.”

“I don’t know a thing about that either.”
