I blink at her.
I’m feeling really loose and bubbly at the same time.
I feel like an entire bottle that is in a freshly poured glass of soda.
I cannot be near Seth right now.
Or… wait…
I look at Seth.
“Are you okay, Jaci?”
“I’m high right now,” I say to him. “Okay? I get stuff from Rosa. I take stuff. Not bad stuff though. I know what I’m doing. But I take stuff, okay? And today she gave me something different. It’s really good. Really fun. I wouldn’t take it regularly though. It would be good for a fun night kind of thing.”
I stick my hands out and stare at them.
“You’re toasted right now,” Seth says. “Holy shit.”
“Yes, I am,” I say. I ball my hands up into fists. “That a problem for you?”
“Why would that be a problem for me?” Seth asks.
“You don’t care?”
“No. Why would I care, Jaci?”
I fall silent.
Rosa is carefully watching the way Seth and I talk to each other.
Are we flirting? Is there an obvious connection? Does Seth just ooze cocky attitude with the assumption that he can get into my pants? Am I showing myself as desperate to Seth? Do I want him that bad?
Again, those quick seconds pass like hours.
I tell myself it must be the drugs.
“I get it,” Seth says. “Theydon’t like the drugs.”
“Who isthey?” Rosa asks.
“Nobody,” I say. “Nothing.”
“I thought you don’t follow rules, Jaci,” Seth says. “Huh? So you’re worried about what they think? You hide taking pills from them? Why? It doesn’t matter. You get to do what you want in life.”
“This guy has a point,” Rosa says. “Never take commands from anyone.”
“It’s not about commands,” I say. “It’s the way my life is. Everything happening.”
I quickly wave my hands.
“Screw this,” I say. “You two are killing my high.”
“Don’t let anyone ruin your high,” Seth says. “Ever.”
“I won’t,” I say. “That’s why I’m here with Rosa.”
“What about the two in the dorm?” Seth asks.
