Ronan brings a fist back. I crouch down and slap Ronan across the face.

He looks at me like he wants to hit me.

He doesn’t. He knows better.

“I said that was enough,” I say to him. Then I look up at Cullen. “Same for you. I’m going to talk to Marty now.”

“Fuck no, love,” Cullen says.

“You don’t own me, Cullen,” I say.

Ronan stands and walks away. He’s pissed off.

“He’s high,” Cullen says. “Piece of shit is all fucked up. Lingering around, looking for you. He’s dangerous. He needs to be killed.”

“Not until I talk to him first,” I say.

Then I shiver.

Did I just okay someone else to die?

“Marty, look at me,” I say. “Tell me what you’re doing here.”

Marty looks at me.

He’s worse than ever now.

My old friend is long gone.

That neighborhood and the drugs have taken him.

“It’s bad,” Marty says. “It’s so bad. He’s looking for a fight. A big fight too.”

“Who? Who ishe?”

“And then Faye…”

“Faye? Is she okay?”

“She’s not okay at all,” Marty says.

I look back and up at Cullen.

“Faye,” I say to Cullen.

“Jaci, I can have someone check things out. You can’t go there.”

“I can do whatever the fuck I want to do,” I say.

“Jaci, you can’t,” Marty says. He makes some weird noises. All I make out is…

He… looking… there… bad…

Marty begins to cry.

I stand up and look at Cullen.

“Nothing new here, Jaci,” Cullen says. “He’s a piece of shit. He wants you to go back there. You have to let your past go.”
