“No,” I say.

He laughs. “Let’s go warm up in the car.”

I have no idea if this is some kind of trap or what.

But if my choice is getting into the car with him or going back to the basement, I’m choosing the car all day long.

Seth lets me walk to the passenger side and get in on my own.

I don’t even bother looking down the alleyway or think about trying to make another escape.

What I know is that Seth can see I’m serious about escaping.

What’s he going to do now?

Tie me up? Handcuff me to something else?

Take me somewhere else?

Hurt me?

Kill me…?

Okay, now I’m starting to panic a little.

Seth reaches across the seat and touches my left leg.

“Relax, Jaci,” he whispers.

“That’s not easy to do right now, Seth.”

“I would have hurt you by now.”

“Says who?”

“Says me.”

“You could be setting me up.”

“How so?”

“Come on,” I say. “You could be winning me right back over and then something terrible happens. You gave me the benefit of the doubt by putting me in your basement. That didn’t keep me there. I escaped. So now what?”

“You really do think like a mafia person,” Seth says. “They teach you this?”

“Nobody taught me anything, Seth. I’m using my brain.”

“So it’s true then. This is in your blood. You’re really part of a mafia family.”

“That’s why you kidnapped me?”

“Don’t worry about that right now,” he says. “Let’s look to the future.”

“The future? What does the future look like for me?”

“I don’t think you’ll be going back inside my house ever again,” he says.

“Great,” I say. “Are we taking a road trip?”
