She wished her dad was here. He could make it all better with just one hug. She could only hope that he would get here soon.

“Rannulf has been the demon’s vessel for so long, that ordinary human blood isn’t enough for him anymore. He either needs a lot of it for one feeding, or he needs the upgraded version, so to speak,” Sebastian took over explaining, seeing that Amelie was already exhausted. “We believe that Rannulf has been taking in Halflings, and feeding them something.”

“What?” Eva was frightened at the thought of having consumed something deadly.

“Don’t worry, he doesn’t want you dead… yet. I believe it’s in the cafeteria drinks. The servers know who the Halflings are and you already know that vampires get their share of blood on the day of the full moon. Halflings don’t need it. They get those drinks, which are tainted by some dark magic potions, which only Xol’gorog knows how to make. I managed to get one to Amelie and she tried it.”

“I was asleep for three whole days,” she told Eva. “Then, I felt like a ragdoll for the next three days, I could barely move. Then, three days later, I was alright again.”

“So, if it has that effect on you, what effect does it have on me?”

Eva jumped up, spreading her fingers in front of her, as if she would figure out if something was wrong with her simply by looking at her own skin.

“You have a special blood type. The rarest of them all. One in every million people has it,” Amelie told her.

“How do you know?” Eva asked.

“Your father told us. He checked. They thought it was some blood anomaly at the hospital when you were born but he knew better and he also knew that you are the kind of a child Rannulf would be searching for.”

“For what?”

“If he manages to taint your blood, then by drinking it, millions of vampires will become dark bloods, following Xol’gorog’s every command.”

“But wait, isn’t this already what Rannulf is doing?”

“Yes, but it’s taking forever. The blood darkens very slowly. Your blood would make it instantaneous. You would be his key to becoming the ruler of all vampires. He wants to proclaim war on the werewolves, on fairies, on all mythical creatures, and either enslave them, or kill them. He doesn’t care which one.”

“That is awful!” Eva shrieked.

“Do you understand now why it is so important that we stop him?” Amelie asked.

“But, how do we do that?”

“We wait for our moment,” Amelie nodded. “We can’t rush. We aren’t ready yet. We lay low and, I’m sorry to tell you, but you’ll have to keep drinking whatever they give you. We can’t risk Rannulf being suspicious of you.”

“Is it safe?” Eva was on the verge of tears. “What if something happens to me?”

“Nothing will happen to you,” Sebastian wrapped his arms around her, whispering in her ear. “I won’t let it.”

“Sebastian will keep bringing you red clover tea which I’ll make,” Amelie assured her. “It should help purify your blood.”

“Will it make me vomit again?” Eva remembered the unpleasant feeling.

“It shouldn’t,” Amelie shook her head. “That was because you drank it for the first time and I made it pretty strong. It has to be, to fight whatever is in those drinks.”

“I’m scared,” Eva whimpered, squeezing Sebastian’s arm.

“I know,” Amelie petted her cheek. “I also know you didn’t ask to be in this situation but your father knew that Rannulf would come looking for you eventually. It was best to pretend he didn’t know anything and arrange for you to be sent here. He wanted to tell you everything before you arrived, we were hoping to have a more solid plan by then, but Rannulf sent his men after him and your mother, and here we are. I am so sorry, sweet child, but sometimes, heroes don’t choose their destiny. It is already chosen for them.”

Eva buried her face in Sebastian’s chest. She felt like crying. Her whole body was shaking with fear and she felt that sudden urge of nausea again but then she wiped her tears away.

That man killed her mother. That man tried to kill her father. Now, he was trying to kill her. Rage started rising inside of her. Rage was better than sadness. Rage was good. From somewhere deep inside of her, courage was born. Desire for revenge. She would kill that demon, making it pronounce her mother’s name with its dying breath, or she herself would die trying.

Chapter 21

“It has stopped raining,” Eva heard Sebastian say, as he stood leaning against the window.

Eva had no idea how much time she had spent here at Amelie’s hut. But, having heard the whole story, she knew it wasn’t safe for the two of them to be seen socializing. It might seem suspicious to Rannulf if he caught wind of it.
