“Sit down. Let me explain.”

Although I thought it might be a dumb idea, I lowered my arms. It had been awhile since I worked on my biceps and they were screaming with the effort of holding that stupid clock over my head. My entire body ached from the adrenaline. “Okay.”

I felt docile. Warm and sleepy. Like I was finally safe. My eyelids grew heavy. “Tell me what’s going on.”

“You don’t have to worry about that Jen. Everything’s going to be fine. Go back to sleep. We’ll take care of everything.”

The last thing I saw before I slipped into sleep was his face, hovering over mine.

Chapter 42

Wes

“Hello brother.” I said, like we had rehearsed. Keeping us straight was difficult to us, let alone outsiders. We hoped that Tim wouldn’t notice that I slipped in for Frank. It was the only chance we had to get Tim alone. He was an idiot and he wanted his revenge. So, we decided to give it to him. He just accepted the fact that I was Frank. And now, he was going to die because of it. “Hand me the knife Tim. I want to make my brother understand what happens when you go too far.”

Tim paused. Please tell me he wasn’t catching on.

“You’re going to do it? That’s no fun. Are you sure man? I can take care of it.”

“He’s my brother. It’s the only honorable thing.”

Tim snorted. “Honorable, huh. I’ll never understand your kind’s obsession with honor.”

“And you never will. So, let’s not mess with thousands of years of history, shall we?”

Tim handed me the knife. I traced Jared’s throat with it. He tried to move to the side, but I could tell he was starting to get dizzy. I peeked out of the corner of my eye. There were still a few feet between Tim and I. He had to not suspect anything. If he cried out, the other men would hear and we wouldn’t be able to make it out of here easily. “I’m not sure if I can do it.”

I held the knife out to him and feigned a pained expression.

“Move out of the way and let an adult handle this.” He walked towards me reaching for the knife. As soon as he got close, I lunged and stabbed him right in the chest. The knife went in easily. Tim looked shocked. His face paled. I covered his mouth and held him as he sank to the floor. It took only a minute before his eyes closed. I turned towards a wide eyed Jared. Using the knife I cut him out of his bindings and helped him get to his feet. He stumbled and fell. He wouldn’t be able to walk for a few minutes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“It was more fun this way.”

“You’re a sick bastard.”

“No, you needed to be taught a lesson.”

“What lesson is that you asshole?”

“That you need us. All of us. You might be an alpha, but you’re not invincible.”

“Just get me the fuck out of here before I puke.”

When we reached the car, Jared rolled down the windows and vomited the entire car ride. After we stopped again, he wiped his mouth and stepped into the night air. I saved my brother. I could only hope he would do the same and let Jen go. Of course, if that’s what she wanted.

Chapter 43

Jennifer

I woke up to Wes nuzzling me. “When did you get back?” I checked his hands and face for wounds. “Are you okay?”

“Fine. It’s done. Tim is out of your life forever. Jared’s been taught a lesson. Frank’s… not a problem anymore.”

“How is that possible?” They finished so quickly. My head was pounding, and my mouth felt dry. Why did I sleep through the entire thing? I tried to remember what I was doing before I fell asleep. Where were the girls? With Mom. I remember that. How did I end up in bed?

“In the end, brotherhood won. Jared and I worked together to put Frank in a calmer place. And Tim got in the way. He’s never going to bother you again.”
