We eat s’mores, drink more wine and beer, point out shooting stars, watch more ships sail by, and I make him the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich over the fire with my favorite cast-iron sandwich maker.

“Wow,” he says, rubbing his belly and pulling me onto his lap for a kiss. “My mom and I always tried to make those campfire sandwiches and it never worked. Everything stuck to the plates.”

“The secret is butter. Lots of butter. You gotta lube it up good,” I explain. “Better flavor than the cooking spray, too.”

“Oh really?” he murmurs, kissing a path down my neck and slipping a hand under the hem of my shirt. “Lube…now you’ve got my attention.”

“You’re awful,” I tease, leaning my head back to encourage him to cover more of my skin with his kisses.

His hand travels up my abdomen, fingers grazing over the fabric of my bra. The brush of his fingers triggers a tightening response in my nipples.

“You bring it out of me. We’d better put this fire out and get inside before we do something illegal,” he says.

I plant soft kisses on his lips, his nose, and all over his face.

“You extinguish this one and I’ll wait up. I’ll be the one naked, in the bedroom.”

Chapter 17

Josh

How did I get so dang lucky?

How did I book this vacation on a total last-minute fluke and a few days later end up naked, in bed, with someone I used to know from this same place?

And when I use the word naked, I don’t just mean our bodies.

Sure, Penny is spectacular to me. I can’t stop gazing at, gently squeezing, kissing, and adoring her breasts. I plan on spending every night for the rest of my life getting lost in her curves, her peaks, her valleys, and everywhere in between.

But what I really mean is how exposed we are to each other.

“I’ve never told anybody that thing about my coworkers stealing my ideas. I thought it made me look like a doormat. If I complained, I figured I’d become a pariah, and I kind of want to keep my job.”

She smiles at me, our bare limbs wrapped around each other, her fingers caressing my temples as I speak.

“I’m so glad you trusted me with that story. And for the record, I believe in you, Joshua. I want to help you build that pool, get your degree, be whatever you want to be. Whatever you do is going to be great, and I want to be there for it.”

The lump in my throat is threatening to undo me.

“I love you, Pigtails.”

Penny’s shoulders shake and in the dimming light, I think she might be crying. The snort tells me otherwise. “I’ve loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you in your gangly adolescence. You made my little pre-teen heart pound. As soon as I realized who you were, I knew fate had intervened. I knew this whole coincidence wasn’t a coincidence at all. We were meant to be together, Joshua. I knew it at ten years old. I knew it when we stopped writing our letters to each other and I think I’ve always known it. You tried to make my day better that time on the dock, and you did. You taught me how to dive and how to do headstands. You drank my terrible lemonade without complaint. Nobody was ever as sweet to me as you were. I’ll love you forever, Joshua.”

Our arms and legs entwined, with declarations of love and devotion, we fall into a tangle of caresses and kisses. The twisting and grasping together of our bodies morphs into a deep, slow penetration. Passionate. Caring. Beyond anything I’ve ever shared with anyone.

She’s mine and I’m hers. Forever.

And yet our vacation has just begun.

Chapter 18

Penny

The morning on day four of my vacation arrives, and I’m overcome by the giggles.

Josh’s arms have been wrapped around me all night in a hug from behind. He’s very good at the big spoon duties. I feel his head move from the pillow.

“Babe, what’s wrong?”
