“No. I’m relieved, actually.”

“Relieved?” I frowned.

He nodded. “Because my gift would’ve been a huge waste had you not gotten in.” Reaching inside his pocket, he pulled out a piece of paper and handed it to me.

I unfolded it, eyeing him curiously before I glanced down at the paper. It was a flyer for a penthouse apartment in New York with an exorbitant price tag.

“I don’t understand.”

“I just put the down payment on it yesterday.”

My head jerked up to his, eyes wide. “You . . . what?”

“Did you really think I was going to let you live in New York for four years and not have a place to stay when I visit?” He bopped me on the nose. “Silly girl.”

He reached out and took my hands in his. “Now, whenever I can get away from filming, I’ll have a home base close to you. No matter where I am in the world or what project I’m working on, or how busy we both are, we’ll have a place we can go.”

My heart fluttered in my chest. “It’s insanely expensive. What if . . .” I trailed off as a million scenarios ran through my head.

What if we didn’t work out?

What if I couldn’t cut it in design school?

What if I was a giant failure?

Then I shoved them all aside because we loved each other, and I was Scarlett Rees, since when did I doubt myself?

So instead, I simply said, “But you hate New York.”

Thorne grinned and placed his finger under my chin, lifting my gaze at the same time he dipped his head down to mine. “I never said I hated New York. It’s just—”

“Inferior to LA?” I grinned, unable to help the happiness growing inside of me like a giant burning ember.

“Exactly.” He reached down and ran a hand through my hair. “Besides, any city that houses Scarlett Rees is the place I want to be. There’s just one more thing?”

He pulled away much too soon, and I eyed him with disappointment as he left me for a moment, heading through a door and into a back room. When he returned a couple minutes later, it was with a massive cake—one my parents had undoubtedly made—with eighteen of the biggest cake candles I’d ever seen, burning brightly.

“Happy birthday to you . . .” he started, his deep baritone tugging on my heart as everyone joined in.

“. . . Happy birthday, dear Scarlett. Happy birthday to you,” everyone sang.

Lowering the cake in front of me, Thorne met my eyes. “Make a wish,” he whispered.

My heart was so full it nearly burst, but my mind drew a blank. “I can’t.”

“Why not?”

I shrugged. “All of them already came true,” I said through my smile.

Then I leaned in and blew out the candles and pulled him in for a kiss, whispering, "I love you."

Want more Lakeview Prep?

They're back!

Who said nerds don't deserve a chance at love?

On a scale of one to ten, I’m a zero.

A complete dork. Nerd extraordinaire.

I’ve never had a girlfriend. Or a first kiss.

But senior year is coming to an end, and I have my sights set on the gorgeous Ella Randalls. Only the blonde-haired beauty doesn’t know I exist.

But for once in my life I want to win at something. So it’s time to make a change.

Especially if I’m to steal her away from one of Lakeview Prep’s notorious Royals.

My nerdy heart is hers. She just doesn’t know it yet.
