“I thought I loved her when she was inside you. How is it possible it's so much more now that she’s here?”
“I don’t know,” Viv said, voice thick with tears. “She’s incredible. We made this.”
He looked down at their daughter and gently traced her little clenched fist with his fingertip, his heart stuttering when her fingers opened reflexively to grip his.
“I don’t know how to be a father. What if I fuck it up?”
“I don’t know how to be a mother. I suspect we’ll figure it out. We’re in this together.”
It struck him suddenly that those were the words she’d said to him the first night they met. When she glanced up at him, he could tell she remembered it too.
Except this time, instead of pushing her away, he pulled her close, captured her lips in a kiss that was soft and sweet, and whispered, “Always.”
