Felicity sucked in a sharp breath, and her voice was hard when she said, “That bastard.”

“I wish he would have told me from the beginning. It would’ve been easier if he’d let this be a duty for us both. Why did he have to lie? Why did he have to make me believe he loved me?”

“Maybe he wasn’t lying?”

Viv glanced up at Alex’s upside-down face. “I found out because one of his friends was texting him about it. He’d apparently mentioned it just a few weeks ago.”

Alex’s face fell. “I’m so sorry, Viv. He doesn’t deserve you.”

“Maybe not, but I don’t know what happens now.” She laid a hand on her stomach, fingertips rubbing over the flat plane. “Because I’m pregnant.”

“Oh, honey.” Dani curled into Viv’s side, laying her head on her shoulder. “How far along are you?”

“I don’t know. I only took one of those at-home tests. How do you calculate that?”

“I think by the date of your last missed period,” Felicity said. “That’s what I remember the doctor saying when I had that scare last year.”

Viv scrunched up her nose and tried to think back. “Six weeks, I think?”

“Jesus. That had to be right around your wedding night. Strong swimmers,” Dani murmured.

“Actually,” Alex said. “A recent study suggests the egg chooses the sperm it wants by sending out a chemical signal to the…and that is not helpful,” she finished, cheeks pink.

“Yeah,” Felicity agreed. “Definitely not helpful. Does he know?”

Viv nodded. “I told him. Right before I left.”

“And have you talked to him since?” Dani reached up to brush a tear off Viv’s cheek. “About what happens next?”

Viv shook her head, not trusting her voice.

“You’ll have to talk to him eventually, honey. You’re both going to be parents. Don’t you think he wants to be in his baby’s life?”

“I know I have to talk to him,” Viv whispered. “But it hurts too much to think about all that right now. I’ve got eight months left to figure it out.”

“Nine,” Alex said. “It’s technically forty weeks gestation, which is ten months total and nine to go. Well, eight and a half. Sorry!” She added, holding her hands up in defense when they all looked at her.

“Why do you even know any of this?” Dani mumbled with a roll of her eyes.

Alex shrugged. “I like to read.”

“He comes by almost every day asking to talk to me.”

Viv turned her head to look at the clock. He’d normally have been by already, but Sofia mentioned she hadn’t seen him today. Part of her wanted him to leave her alone because it felt easier to be mad at him, but another part of her, the stupid part that had fallen in love with him in the first place, liked that he was still trying.

“Next time he comes, you should actually go downstairs.”

“But make sure Sofia doesn’t answer the door,” Felicity added.

“Yeah,” Dani agreed. “She was scary when she opened the door until she realized it was us. I’ve never seen a real live person snarl before, but she managed it.”

Viv laughed, wiping at her wet cheeks. “I’m glad you guys came by. I’ve missed you. And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Collin. I wanted to.”

“We understand,” Alex assured her. “If you’d told Felicity and she blabbed to half the Mafia, it could have gotten ugly. Collin was a loose cannon. He was always going to go off at some point.”

“I donotblab,” Felicity pouted.

“Keep telling yourself that, cupcake,” Dani replied, reaching over to pat Felicity’s arm. “Do you want us to go so you can be alone?”
