“Alex,” Viv said, taking another hesitant step toward the door. “We can talk about this. We don’t have to decide right now.”

“We don’t need to talk about it. My mind is made up. God, after everything I’ve done for you, you can’t do this one little thing for me. You’re so selfish!” Alex stomped her foot against the carpet.

“You’re right,” Viv replied, mouth dry. “I…I’ll do it. For you, Alex.”

She squeezed her eyes shut at the idea of aborting her child and reminded herself she was only saying what Alex wanted to hear. When she opened her eyes, Alex was smiling again. It looked too wide for her face, and it was edged with madness.

“See? Now was that so hard? There are other ways to have kids. We can try something else if you really want them.”

“That’s a good idea. Definitely something to consider.”

“You know,” Alex said, tapping her finger against her lip. “I didn’t think we’d ever get to be together like this. You wouldn’t lie to me, right, Viv?”

Alex looked dejected at the thought, and Viv quickly shook her head, pulse pounding in her ears. “Of course not. I’m just glad it’s all out in the open now.”

“Me too. Oh!” Alex clapped her hands in excitement. “We’re going to be so happy together. Just wait and see. I feel like we need to celebrate! I think I have some champagne. We can get drunk and then see where the night takes us.”

Viv’s stomach twisted, but she forced herself to smile and nod. Once Alex was in the kitchen, she’d have at least a few minutes to grab her purse and get out. As soon as she was away, she’d call someone. Her dad, her brothers.

At the sound of footsteps on the porch, they both glanced at the front door seconds before someone knocked.

“Are you expecting someone?” Viv asked.

“No. Wait here.”

Alex bent to retrieve the knife she’d never used to cut the pound cake, gripping it tightly.

“Alex? Are you home?”

Alex spun to face Viv, face contorted with rage. “What the fuck is he doing here?”

“I don’t know.” Viv shook her head as Aidan pounded on the door again. “He has no idea I’m here. I haven’t talked to him in a week.”

“You lied to me!” Alex shrieked. “You couldn’t wait to go back to him and be his whore!”

“Alex, of course not. I would never lie to you.”

“He can’t have you. You’re mine.”

When the frame splintered, Alex surged forward, shoving Viv into the wall, causing pain to radiate from her shoulder down her arm. Aidan rushed in, Brogan fast on his heels, and Alex immediately wrapped her arm around Viv’s shoulders, holding the knife point to her throat. When she swallowed, she felt it dig into her skin.

“I knew you would fuck this up for us again. But you’re too late,” Alex said. “She said she wants to be with me now.”

Aidan glanced at Viv, his gun still trained on Alex, and she could read the confusion in his gaze.

“It’s true,” Viv said, unable to keep the tremble from her voice. “We’re going to be together now. I’m sorry, Aidan.”

“Don’t call him that,” Alex hissed, tightening her grip on Viv’s shoulders. “You don’t deserve her,” she said to Aidan.

“You’re right,” Aidan replied. “I don’t. She needs someone who can take care of her.”

“Exactly,” Alex agreed. “And I’m the only one who can do that.”

“You’ll take great care of her and the baby.”

On a snarl, Alex dropped the knife to Viv’s stomach, and Viv couldn’t help the whimper that escaped her.

“We’re not going to raise your spawn. Maybe I should end it for her while you watch. Then we won’t even need an abortion, will we, sweetheart?”
