“That’s what I’m paying you for.”

Rider swallowed a laugh. “I’m being paid?”

She waved a hand. “A figure of speech.”

“Okay. Accuracy is great, but so is speed, especially under pressure. You have to be able to pop off a few shots in rapid succession, and you won’t have time to take aim more than once.”

“Then how can I hit my target?”

“A lot has to do with how you hold the gun. We’re going to use a thumbs forward grip.”

Thankfully, Paris didn’t balk when he stepped close to her and placed her hands in the proper position. He, however, had a problem with touching her. His nails extended, as did his teeth, forcing Rider to focus on something in the distance to calm down.

“Like this?” she asked.

“Yes. You also need to keep your elbows locked since you don’t want the recoil to make you lose your line of sight. How about giving it a try?” He would have spent more time helping her, but he needed the break to allow his libido to calm down.

Paris faced the target and spent some time positioning her hands. Part of Rider wanted her to hit the target, but the part that wanted to protect her wished she’d miss. Paris had no business going against drug runners—assuming Richard Delancey was indeed involved in this mess.

She inhaled and pulled the trigger twice. The first shot missed, but somehow the second one knocked the plate off the tree. This time when she turned toward him, she was smiling, and that made her a very dangerous woman.

CHAPTERFIVE

Paris had just climbedout of the shower when her cell rang. The tone told her it was Jenna. She finished wrapping a towel around her body and rushed to the side table in the bedroom to grab the phone.

“Hello there,” she said, once she swiped the button.

“So? How did the date go?” Jenna asked.

“It wasn’t a date, and it was fine. Rider is exactly who he said he is.” And more. His competency intrigued her. And yes, the man could be charming when he wanted.

“I want all of the details. Did you get the sense he was working for Harrison Industries?”

“No. Not at all.”

Paris explained that he asked her if she was practicing to hit a person or be in a competition.

“What did you tell him?”

“The truth. I don’t know why I blurted it out, but I could tell he was being honest with me. He said he and Grayson are here to find the source of the drugs too.”

“And you believed him?”

A trickle of doubt seeped in. “Yes. If you’d seen his eyes, you would have thought the same thing. He said he was working for a General Armand in Florida.”

“Did you look him up?” she asked.

“No.”

“Why not?”

Something was going on with Jenna. “Is there something you aren’t telling me?”

Jenna didn’t say anything for a moment. “It was all well and good when we were trying to find evidence that the company was manufacturing and selling illegal drugs, but if these two men are here to stop it, it makes it more real.”

“Hey, it’s okay. I’m not asking you to do anything. I just need you to be my sounding board. To be honest, Rider made it clear that unless I can hit a moving target every single time, the shifter could easily kill me.”

“What are you going to do?”
