“Fight like hell?” Preston grinned.

“That might work, but we suggest you attack one of the wolves, gripping somewhere near his neck. Then move around so that the animal in your grasp is between you and the other animal. It’s hard to do, but it can be done.”

Preston was a good hand-to-hand fighter, but he didn’t have the needed expertise to feel confident against wolves like the ones who were in the Franklin Clan. “I’ll keep it in mind.”

“Ready?” Alex asked.

Not really, but with Hammer, and possibly Paul Franklin, wanting to make someone pay for helping Anna escape, Preston had little choice.

In a flash, Alex and Liam shifted. Preston and Benson followed suit. Their teachers bared their teeth, probably wanting to let them know that this time they wouldn’t be taking it easy on them. He and Benson needed to experience a real fight. Hopefully, this match wouldn’t be to the death.

Alex attacked Preston while Liam went after Benson. Preston had to focus on reaching the throat. If the neck was protected, he was told to go for the flank. Snapping a leg was good, too, as the wolf would take time to heal.

Alex lunged at Preston’s throat, but he’d anticipated the attack and moved to the side.

“Good job,”Alex told him.“Now try to get to me.”

His teacher would expect him to attack his neck area, which was why Preston went for the flank and managed to get in a quick bite before Alex moved out of reach.

Benson yelped, but Preston refused to be distracted. Just as he was trying to figure out his next attack, Alex and Liam stilled. Only then did Preston recognize the other wolf signatures.

“Someone’s here,”Liam telepathed.“Let’s head outside and see what they want.”

“Should we be in our wolf form or human form?”Preston asked. If by some chance Hammer was out there, he wanted to know which wolf was which.

“Human. We can’t open the door in our animal form. Besides, if they see there are four of us, they might decide it’s not worth fighting.”

That was wishful thinking. A second later, all four had returned to their human form. Benson raced to the door and opened it a crack. “There are six men.”

Shit.

Alex faced them. “Change of plans. You two see what they want. If they shift, you two shift and head to the forested area. You’ll be able to hide better. We’ll follow. I’m hoping there will be some surprise when we show up.”

“Let’s hope they can’t detect how many signatures are in the barn,” Preston said.

Benson pulled out his phone. “I’m going to text my uncle.”

“Don’t forget about your brothers,” Preston said.

“Good thinking. Seth and Trevor are somewhere on the ranch. I’ll contact them too. Go on out there and see what they want so they don’t come in here. Stall them for as long as you can,” Benson said.

Benson was the lawyer. He should be the one to have a discussion with these people, but Preston would do his best. “Let’s hope they don’t have guns.” He stepped out of the barn and smiled, trying to act as if he had no idea who they were. “Howdy. What can I do for you?”

One of the men was Hammer. Preston wasn’t certain who the others were, but if he had to guess, they were Franklin Clan members.

“Where’s Anna?” Hammer demanded.

Did they really think he'd know? Maybe they found out that the Midvale sheriff wasn't the one to save her. “I’ve not spoken with her, but her uncle called me and said she was safe.”

It would be helpful if both he and Benson were there. From the men’s rigid stance, they weren’t in the mood for chatting.

“Hurry,”he telepathed to his friend. Only then did he remember one of these men might have the ability to read his mind.

Hammer took a step forward. “Where is she? I won’t ask you again.”

Preston held up his hands. “I don’t know. Her uncle is taking her someplace safe, but he didn’t say where.”

“We need the money. Ackerman never paid. If I don’t return with the ten grand, my boss will not be happy.”
